I recently heard that Akira has a director's cut. I own the
Special Subtitled Edition. First of all, is this true? Secondly, if
you've seen it, in what ways does it differ from the US release, i.e.
what different footage does it have, and how good is the added
animation? Also, is it the director's cut (preffered version), or
merely an extended cut? If you can answer this, please e-mail me. I
rarely have time to check this NG. Thanks in advance.

I was under the impression that there was a "director's cut" of the film, but
Otomo didn't really like it since he didn't want the extra scenes to be
included anyway.

Arnold Kim
will not watch "The Lost World" on TV in spite of extra footage

Hmm, could you be talking about "The Making of Akira" perchance? I saw a tape of it at a rental
store I occasionally visit. I guess I could get some more info on it if you'd like.

Amy Chan-chan: Wish the store rental fees didn't require so much okane.

Extra stuff was storyboarded probably, maybe even pencil tested, but not
animated. The budged was high enough for an anime film as it was, without
them wasting even more on footage they wouldn't use.

That's what I heard. I looked around a bit last night. It seems
to me that there is no director's cut, nor an extended cut. There is
something available on VHS in Japanese called The Making of Akira, and
it has some cut scene featured. According to my research, I must
conclude that there's no director's cut. I was just wondering if anyone
here knew for sure. By the way, where the hell did this rumor start?
I've heard it from many places, but when did this begin, and why, if
there isn't a director's cut?

The only "Super-Special" version that I've ever seen is the Criterion
Collection CAV LD version. It was something like $99.95. Other than that, I
can't think of anything...

False.

Criterion released an LD which included a "Making Of" video and tons
of supplemental material (including storyboards for an extended opening
sequence which was dropped from the movie)... but no additional footage
for the film itself. *THIS* is what people are talking about.

No, no...

The Production Report is included in the LD box, but the LD *also* has
still-shot supplemental material. That's where the storyboard
sequence comes from.

To get rid of any potential confusion, the synopsis I copied of Akira: Production Report
was from a VHS cassette color tape sleeve. It was up on the rental store shelf and wasn't
attached to an LD set. I think Streamline was offering it to be independently sold.

Actually, this rumor is understandable when you look at all different
releases of Akira.

- the standard English-dubbed, pan&scan VHS tape
- the widescreen, subtitled VHS tape
- the tape "box set" which was just the movie + the Akira Production
Report (a making of short). IMO, this is one of the main sources of the
rumor because I saw this listed in a catalog where the running time
listed was really the sum of the movie and the making of segment.
- the "standard" LD release
- the Criterion LD release which included the storyboard for an
alternate, longer opening sequence which wasn't animated

I read in _Monsters Attack_ magazine, around the time the movie was
released in Japan, that the only editing done was to tie
scenes together.
