Irresponsible Captain Tylor DVD: Damn good dub ^_^

impressed with the dub. Great acting, and the script is very close to
Neil's sub script. The only changes are mostly minor rephrasings, or
the occational dropped word to make it sound more natural. Lisa Ortiz
of Slayers fame is in it, which is both good and bad. The good thing is
she once again does a great job. The not so good is that she has three
roles: The Empress and the two cute twins. Ortiz simply sounds the same
in each voice (she had the same problem as two characters in the dub of
Gall Force). However, she's perfect for both characters so as they
dont' share much screen time it's a minor complaint :)
Over all, I give this dub high marks. Chalk up yet another anime I no
longer have to read ^_^

There is one difference between them I noticed immediately. It is
extremely subtle and really not the least bit important, but:
In episode two, when the handsome Ralgon dude leches as Yuriko, the
sub has our hero saying, "A terrorist dedicated to his revolution
shouldn't act like a salary man." The dub says "dictator" rather
than "salary man".
In Japan, the stereotype of a salary man is a middle-aged lecher in
a cheap suit. Now, of course, a North American audience probably
would not understand that. But even so, I don't understand why the
dub did not say "lecher" or "pervert" or something similar. It
would have been close to the original intent. Much closer than
"dictator", anyway.
As I said, subtle and really not important. But it wrankles me. I
bet the translators themselves didn't even know what "salary man"
meant in this context.

Nah, I think they do, but like you said,
it probably would fly over the head of the NA public.
They probably used dictator instead because it works
better in the context of the line (revolution->dictator
and dictators often take advantage of their subjects),
plus you know how much Americans are so anti-tyrants
(if there's ever a revolution, it must be for a democracy).
So it plays on their emotions of extreme hatred,
as the original line probably does on the Japanese's.

Thank you very much. There were some problems with the dub
and some things we'd do differently if we could do it again, but I
think the Tylor dub is one of the best I've ever heard. My special
favorite actor in there is David Brimmer as Mr. Yamamoto. I swear,
that guy rocks my world.

think that it "sucks"? Come on, I hate dubs and I happen to like this
one for the most part. And no, I'm not just saying that because I had
input on it. I think the people we cast for our big 5 principals
(Tylor, Yamamoto, Yuriko, Azalyn, and Dom) did an outstanding job on
this dub. Especially Yamamoto. I can't imagine anyone coming closer
to recreating the original performance in English than David Brimmer
pulled off. Simply wonderful.

To me a dictator is "A terrorist dedicated to his revolution"
"shouldn't act like a salary man" is like saying "shouldn't act like a
common worker"
one with no ambition or cause to champion.
A "pervert" is one who corrupts or distorts, not unlike the translators.

In this context, "salary man" means a lecher, or "dirty old man".

^_^ With the notable exception of the redubbing of the Opening and Closing
songs.
Crispen Freeman - He did an excellent job as Tylor. The voice is actually
fairly hard to do because the character is so over the top and he did very
well.
Rachael Lillis - She is Yuriko. I could listen to her talk all day. Not
to mention that in the OAV she has to sing and does a brilliant job.
David Brimmer - Yamamoto is the man. He does an incredible job with this
character. I especially love when he blows up at the Captain.
Lisa Ortiz - Excellent as Azalyn. I love the line "I hate you. . . I hate
everyone." Oh my god that line had me cracking up with it's delivery.
However I didn't like her as much as the twins although she did an
excellent job. I think that is because she did such a good job as Azalyn.
Shia Has - I can't remember the Voice Actress' name (I think it is Veronica
Taylor), but she is very cool. Especially when she insults Yamamoto in the
OAV. Nifty little bit of trivia I picked up from a convention: She is
also the VA for Ash from Pokemon and this voice is more like her real
voice.
Dom - Again I can't remember the VA's Name. But he was very smooth and
handled the transition from Rage to Cool Cucumber very well.
The Rest of the cast is very cool as well although they didn't stand out.
Which is really what you want. They fit their roles.
