Is this a poll? I'd put the Sakura Wars opening over it...by a little.

I'd give it to SMJ's "Successful Mission", for all the wild changes in tempo
and pitch that Megumi's voice takes...

OMG has my vote for "My Heart..." as well as "Congratulations" for End

I'd place my vote a hundred times over for "Kiseki no Umi", the intro to
Record of Lodoss War TV. I can't think of a more soaring and epic
sounding-song in anime.

I'll gladly second that. Did you catch the live performance of that
song at Otakon '99? Yoko Kanno on piano and some random staff guy on
clarinet...it was incredible.

Yep! I really didn't expect that at all, and when it came on, I grabbed
my friend and yelled "That's my song! She's playing the best song ever!"

Of course, my friend was too enraptured by the previous song, the one
from Macross Plus. That's his favorite song in anime.

No doubt, it is Shoujo Kakumei Utena's "Rinbu Revolution." There is very
little competition... Eva and possibly Slayers Try could be close, but
there is none better than Masami Okui in that song for an OP.

Now, if it was just songs / animated sequences in general... Masami Okui
and Utena again, this time it's the scene where "Toki ni Ai wa" plays in
the movie. Best animated sequence I've EVER SEEN!!!

I would agree that the intro sequence to Utena is one of the best, but
if we're talking about just the song, I would have to say "Give A
Reason" from Slayers Next. BTW, I haven't seen any Utena, just the
intro video. It looks very intriguing...

that's in my top 3, but i think the same could be said for the op theme to
urusei yatsura. that's the only anime soundtrack i own, for that and the
end theme.
i'm also quite fond of "you get to burning" from nadesico. i love the fade
in. and the gekiganger theme is pretty sweet too.
how about worst? i love the first 10 seconds of the kenshin opening, but
the rest is really bad and does nothing to set the mood for the show.

Close, but no cigar. It's second to Two Mix's "Just Communication" from
Gundam Wing. Accompanied with the opening sequence with which it's
perfectly synchronized (pun intended), Creul Angel Thesis beats all comers
easily. As a piece of music on its own, though, the techno-pop/eurodance
Just Communication (and its sequel song) is much more engergizing.

I'd _love_ it if this somehow managed to get into the Toonami version... It
_is_ played as part of the background music of one of the later episodes, so
it'll have to be on at least the uncut version.

....Darn, there go two of my postings--

All that leaves me with is:
A) "Happy Birthday", Nuku Nuku, and
B) "Full of Memories", Ranma 1/2--A sentimental little tune that at
first seems to make absolutely no sense for the show, but not when DoCo
covers it. ^_^

Yeah, it's an opening that easily would qualify as a music video
based on well it fits the song. Have you seen the Nadegelion video
someone made? It's a video of Cruel Angel's Thesis using Martian
Successor Nadesico footage, exactly matching the Eva opening. It's
really hilarious. For comparison, a small version of the Eva opening
appears in the lower left hand portion of the video. Everything
which happens in the Eva opening has something corresponding using
Nadesico footage, with a corresponding character (Ruri for Rei,
Ryoko for Asuka, Yurika for Misato, Akito for Shinji, etc.) peforming
the same action or movement, or in the same situation. It's great.

I'm going to probably get grilled for this due to my lack of experience in
anime...I've d/l'ed a couple of OP's and so far...

Evangelion has an awesome intro, but it seems too short...or I might just really
be wanting more (I've never seen any EVA yet...waiting for DVD's)

Slayers TV (I think the first one) has a cool song, except the time when they
say "get along, try again" at the end... kills everything, I don't like Japanese
speaking English, sorry, no offense. (try FY, 1st ep, sounds like "I wou try to
do my besto." Sorry, Japanese people.)

I like the FY TV series OP, the song is upbeat at the end and soft in the
beginning, and the footage looks cool and would be even better if it weren't a
spoiler with Chiriko, and Yui popping out of nowhere... also the Sax in the OP
is annoying in the full version of the song.

I don't like the Tenchi OVA 1 opening, the tone is too...sad, I guess. Nice
footage, though. And you can't deny the coolness of Ryoko and Sasami.

Tenchi OVA 2 has a somewhat weird song...but it can be catchy. I just have
qualms with the art and the weird eyes they have, especially Sasami's.

Tenchi TV series 1 is my favorite of all Tenchi OP's, the song is cool, and
Ryoko spinning in air is always cool.

Hmmm...

1. Mad Machine - Opening to "Bubblegum Crisis" OVA episode two. Perfect. The
best song from a series with many great songs.
2. In the Night - Opening to "Key the Metal Idol." Beautiful melody.
Accompanies the animation ideally.
3. Cruel Angel's Thesis - Opening to "Neon Genesis Evangelion." Upbeat but
powerful.
4. Itoushi Hito No Tame Ni - Opening to "Fushigi Yuugi" TV. I hate the horn

5. Kiseki No Umi - Opening to "Record of Lodoss War" TV. As someone else

# 2 is "Miracle Body ni Goyouchi." I've romanized it, so I'll plug
that to the end of the post for the hell of it. ^_^;

All right... mine:

"Pure Snow" by Sasaki Yuko for Himiko-Den. Beautiful...
"Ai Just on my love" by Sharan Q for Sorcerous Stabber Orphen. Could
just be I'm a Sharan fan, but... ^^;;;
"Incomplete Concerto" for Violinist of Hameln second OP. Wai... *__*;
"Koku no Meikyuu" for Maze. Uber cool. ^_^

Thinking about it, though, I tend to be more partial to ED themes.

"Kaze wa Mirai ni Fuku," Trigun.
"Junk Boy," Maze TV 1st ED.
"Last Kiss," Orphen
"Kizudarake no Tsubasa," Violinist.
"Jing Ling," Spriggan

good. ^^;

The best was when Eva 01 was replaced by an Aestevalies. :)

I'm surprised -- I didn't think anyone else would pick this one. I think the main reason
I like it so much, though, is because an instrumental version was used as the BGM for
almost all of the heavily emotional scenes in the anime -- all fifteen episodes of which
I watched consecutively -- and so it's very evocative of the feelings in those scenes.

It's especially sorrowful if [spoiler warning to end of paragraph] your favorite
character happened to be Karin. If I'm not terribly mistaken, it played as she said
farewell.

There's a longer version of the intro song on the 1st EVA soundtrack CD --
a worthy investment.

I used to like "Give A Reason", until I heard the english words to the
song. (No, _not_ the English translation of the Japanese words -
there's an English version of the song in "The Best of Slayers (from TV
and radio)" 2-CD set.)

Call me old-fashioned, but I still think the best anime OP ever is BGC

Speaking of English, though... I'm surprised that no one (that I've

(esp. the album verion) and it's entirely in English. ("real" English.)

Well, I'd say "Tell me Why" from Berserk, but:
1) It's in English
2) It's Bad (but the good type of bad)

Hmm, that leaves
1) Kiseki no Umi from Lodoss TV
2) Tsubasa from Battle Athletes TV
3) Breeze from Slayers Try
4) Geki! Tekoku Kagekidan? Sakura Taisen
5) Upside Down ~ Eien no wa St. Tail

Well, Eva's pretty far down there for me, but since this is an opinion
poll, it doens't matter ;)

Too bad it's only Japanese Language or I'd have to add in H.T. from
Trigun and Tank! from Cowboy Bebop :P

I'd give it to either "Tank" by Yoko Kanno, the Escaflowne song by Yoko
Kanno, "Sobayaku" by Judy and Mary, or "Just Communication" by Two-Mix.

or "You Get to Burning."

or "1/2"

or the KareKano opening song.

or the "Lupin" theme!

yeah, I'm thinking of another one. "active heart" is it. that doesn't sound

Maaya Sakamoto does sing the intro to Lodoss TV, so you're porbably

Ugh. I've heard that version, it's pretty atrocious, but it doesn't ruin
the (Japanese) song for me. Though Hayashibara's version of Give a Reason
is probably the best Slayers OP song IMO (especially the Remix version,
not the giga mix), slightly edging out Breeze. I also like the ED to
Slayers Try ("don't you forget...watashi blah blah")...The OVAs have some
nice songs too. And of course it doesn't hurt that Masami Okui sings

Well, it's not a standard opening in the sense that most openings are
self-contained. It's more or less continuous with the episode, but
nitpicking aside, it's a very good song (along with Mad Machine and
Soldier Girls). Would have been interesting had they made more BGC eps
with Vision in a lead role replacing Priss (which, as I have heard
before, was originally planned at one time).

Normally when I think Kare Kano, I think of the whole OST as being
good instead of just one song. The same goes for Giant Robo. :P

Active Heart? That was Gunbuster wasn't it? That wasn't Yohko Kanno
either... No wait! The end theme for Lodoss is Active Heart too.
Silly me ;)

Yup, Maaya Sakamoto did both the opening and ending to Lodoss with
Yohko Kanno.

BTW, I like all of the songs that Kanno and Sakamoto did together.

How can you say that. "Fair Wind" the Breeze English version, "Give
a Reason" the English version and the English version of Get Along
were the reasons I bought that CD. Much better than the English
version of Chala Head Chala :)

I'm suprised no one said "We Gotta Power" was their favorite. Not

The best songs reflect the nature of the series, or what the
series should feel like (often the show is poorer than the song
attempts to show) With this in mind,

Gundam 0083- "Men of Destiny"

Cowboy Bebop- "Tank"

My two favourites. There are others, but I have to check the
names first.

Most anime mpeg websites will have it for download.

And by the way, if you like the intro, you'll _love_ the series. Captures

Sakamoto Ma'aya sings both Kiseki no Umi, the opening song to Lodoss TV
and Active Heart. Active Heart was the coupling to the Kiseki no Umi single
and is not on any of the Lodoss OSTs as far as I know. So if you wanna
hear it, get the single or you can pick up Ma'aya-chan's HotchPotch CD which
is a singles + coupling collection.

Active Heart is this upbeat rock-pop song that is pretty good. The style of
it is
poppish so it doesn't fit the Lodoss theme at all, but I don't think it was
ever
meant to be... it's just a Ma'aya song, and a good one at that.

Oh wait, i think zerog.simplenet.com/kanno/music.html has it so you can
stream
it for yourself

1. the jap. op to sailor moon (season 1-4) (moonlight Densetsu)

2. the Cuitie Honey OVA theme (subtitled version)

3 the op. to Pretty Sammy TV

4. the opening to Slayers (tv) (get along)

well and is still a strong opener

2 Believing in Power of Zeta from Zeta Gundam(of Course) one of those classics.

3 Don't look Back from Sonic Soldier Borgman TV this song was made for driving
fast down the highway.

If you haven't seen them check'em out

Well, personally I agreee with the person who started it all... Eva's
opening theme is a favorite. So much so, that when watching it with
friends, they wanted to fast forward through the opening... but to me,
it's an essential way to get in the mood.

As far as background music, Gundam 0083 impressed me to no end. Everything
about that series, especially the music, just seemed to get better as the
series went on.

As far as the other tangent of English-language: for sentimental reasons,
the Star Blazers theme still sends chills up my spine. :)

Ah, fun.

IMO, Just Communication is the best Japanese language intro
song, and it's still the best Two Mix song so far. It fits
the show absolutely perfectly. I can actually think of more
wonderful Japanese language ending themes, though, like the
first series Legend of Galactic Heroes ED, and Heart of
Sword, and Gasaraki's ED.

I was going to mention "We Gotta Power" but I forgot the title at the
time...and that 's the only Dragonball Z song I've heard....

.....besides the GREAT English ones! (snicker)

Good choice, let me add some more in.

1. 'Voices' from 'Macross plus'. Technially speaking i don't think
this is the opening theme, but the serie starts with it and it sends
shivers down my spine.

2. 'In the night' from 'Key the metal idol'. Saw it on the Shinnenkai
and the music immediately graped my attention like it should.

3. 'Duvet' from 'Serial experiments Lain'. Just like 'In the night'
the opening theme promised something interesting and IMHO the made
good on that promise. (Oops, thats English.)

4. Opening from 'Ghost in the shell'. I hope they fired the person who
suggested that they should replace that music with something else.
Albert.

Come on let them go, it's the 21th century show.

That falls into the select category of OPs which are annoying
and/or weird the first few times one hears them, but which are
so catchy and fun to sing that you eventually like them.

Others I'd put in that category include the first Ranma OP,
and the Tenshi ni Narumon OP. (Datte Daisuke)

"We Gotta Power"'s okay, but it's probably a distant second for DBZ songs
behind the incredible "Cha La Head Cha La", a song though which I can
actually _feel_ my adrenaline pumping. And it's another one that works well
with the opening sequence.

Phew... just though "Why the heck didn't anybody mention this yet!?!" and

But you just _had_ to spoil it... =P

Well, if you want one that works with the opening animation, then
there's "Saa" from Mamotte Shugogetten and "An Ordinary Sunday" from
Hana Yori Dango. Both have great dance scene openings that work with
the music. :P

It's on the end (there is no intro) theme: "Moment's Memory/Memories
of Times" from Please Save my Earth. It caught the mood of the series
perfectly and the end animation matches the tempo and feel of the song
(waves vs the waves of the song).

There is an mpg of it on this page:
http://www.nnanime.com/PSME/psme_cds.html

Similarly, the "voices" on Macross Plus (by the same person) is also
amazing for its "haunting" quality.

I just really think that few songs have caught the mood and feel of a
show (right from the first hearing to the latest) better than PSME's
Moment's Memory.

Ah, an old-timer.. ^_^
In that case I have to add:
1. "Unchuu Senkan Yamato" (probably the most recognized anime song ever)
2. "Dunbine Tobu" from Aura Battler Dunbine (sung by MIO)
3. "Yoru o Buttobase!" also from Sonic Soldier Borgman - another song made for
driving fast

I vote for the opening theme too. Because 8 or 7 years ago, i heard the
song only once or twice, and it's always in my head ever since. Not
many songs have that kind of effect. But one thing is the song i heard
is in english verison, not japanese.

Must say whoever that sung the song, her english is very badly
pronouned.. still can't figured out the lyrics

You're thinking of Record of the Lodoss War OVA not Record of the

So i'd realised :b Always thought there is only one version of lodoss
until yesterday :b And to make it more confusing, the local tv network
broadcasted the anime.

I agree with every one of the above choices, but would ask you to consider
one more: the theme to "Please Save My Earth". The first time you hear
this music, you're convinced you've heard it before; a great metaphor for
a story about reincarnation.
