I looked on wikipedia, and it said that "Yakitate Japan" is a shonen
anime, and that "Yumiero Patissiere" is a shoujo anime. I have also
heard YP referred to as a reverse harem anime.

My interest in these shows, is that the main character is an
aspiring/accomplished chef or cook of some kind, so I consider them and
some others (Food Wars, etc.) to be of the genre "cooking anime."

I was wondering if there are any that could be considered "sewing anime".

There are various characters that do sew, such as:

Ranma 1/2: There is an episode where it is stated that Shampoo is
fairly skillful at hand sewing.

Maria Sama ga Miteru: There is a scene that shows Sachiko (or Yumi, I
can't precisely remember) going to a sewing class.

Genshiken(I think I have the title right, but the one about the anime
club at the high school or the junior college): I have not seen this,
but I have seen an online review, and when Grarkada, the reviewer, talks
about the members, one of the members he mentions is the resident expert
in making cosplay costumes. I assume that this means that this member
is accomplished at sewing.

There are no doubt several other characters spread about here and there
that can sew, but the only show I can think of that can be even remotely
classified as a "sewing anime" is Kill la Kill.

After all, they make anime about Go, Mahjong, various types of card
games, etc., so why not sewing?

The obvious one is Paradise Kiss, about fashion designers.

That is Tanaka and he is a whiz at sewing and is trying to start
a business doing custom-made cosplay outfits. He and Ohno, who spent a
long time in the USA, have a thing going because she love cosplay. He
likes it too and usual wears an Edo or earlier warrior costume.

You can read the manga from online sources and it is a little
better than the anime. Both are great and I re-watch Genshiken fairly
often and re-read the manga from the original series and from the
new Genshiken Nidaime aka Second Season in the USA.
Now in case you are interested the Genshiken Anime was cancelled
after the first season to the chagrin of the characters. A couple
of years later the original series was extended with a US Genshiken 2
that doubled the length of the original Finally after a while they
started the Genshiken Nidaime published as Second Season. Besides
that you have Kujibiki Unblance a fictional story in the original
anime published as an anime series with several pivotal Genshiken
episodes included as OVAs.
Tanaka loves to build models as well and several chapters
make that love of model a pivotal matter as well as giving tips.

Brand name clothing is very big in Japan.

Paradise Kiss is a good series with lots of sewing going on
I got to watch it during the time when SF TV stations had lots of
anime spread around the channels.

In Maison Ikkoku Kyoko sewed a kimono for her husband but
it was not well done, later she repaired her work and gave it to
Godai, Grandma Godai makes a summer weight kimono for him as well.

An episode or a short segment does not qualify a show as a sewing anime,
but I recall these scenes:

Akane sews a women repellent patch to Happosai's clothes.

Sailor Moon, wedding dress competition episode, the teacher is possessed
and sews her wedding dress, the girls enter the competition, with Usagi
trying to use the house curtains as fabric for her dress.

Maya, from Captain Harlock, sews Harlock's uniform and flag.

Tomoyo's creating Sakura's costumes in Card Captor Sakura

The scene or episode that I was thinking of was an episode where Akane
had to repair a doll, but Shampoo actually did it, and someone actually
something like "This is way too good a job, noone will believe that
Akane actually did it." Perhaps even Akane said that about herself and
her sewing skills.
