Does anyone know of any instances where menstruation is refered to in
anime? I can only think of the following:
Kimagure Orange Road: Komatsu and Hatta are explaining the "facts of life" to
Yusaku. At one point they ask him if he has ever noticed that girls don't have
to take P.E. on certain days...
Slayers: It's mentioned more than once that Linna Inverse looses her powers
when she is menstruating.
Omoide Poro Poro: There is a flashback sequence where the main character is
recalling her days at school in which the subject of menstruation is a key plot
point.
Neon Genesis Evangelion: In an episode near the end of the series Asuka is
upset that she is having her period.
Anybody know any others?

It's kind of vague, but in Fushigi Yuugi there's a point where Nuriko

girls.'

Mizuiro Jidai, a.k.a. "The Blue-Green Years," has main character Kawai
Yuuko getting her first period in the fifth episode. A very traumatic
time of her life for poor Kawai-san - but then again, every episode was
a traumatic time for her... ^_^

Ghost in the Shell, but you have to get the subtitled version, NOT the english
dub. When in the dub, early on, Batou asks the Major about all the static in her
head, she attributes it to "a loose wire". In the sub, she says it's "that time of
the month". That's how it is in the manga, also.

I remember once in Gunbuster, someone had a peanut-butter and jelly
sandwich. Wow! It was a revelation to me! The artistic impact of a
PB&J in the scene was just staggering! It was truly a stroke of genius
on Gainax's part to use such a powerful narrative device as peanut-butter!
But if for some reason you're not interested in talking about
peanut-butter in anime, can we talk about something else that captures
the imagination of everyone in the community?
For instance:
- Computer keyboards in Anime
- Flowers in Anime
- Roads in Anime
- Burned toast in Anime
- That little speck of dust that sometimes gets on the cel during production
and causes a little white dot on colored backgrounds in some scenes in Anime
and one of my personal favorites:
- Spam in Anime
These issues are vital to all fandom! We must discuss them in great detail!
Surely, these topics evoke such complexity and speculation as to be worthy of
a multi-hundred post long thread, at the very least! So please, let's all
talk about peanut-butter in anime. Do it for the children.

Well, DUH!, that's kinda the point of the whole Manga/Anime. More human than
human and what not.

It's a joke, dude. Almost all the people in section 9 (i.e., Motoko,
Batou, Togusa, etc...) are cyborgs and must have monthly maintenance on
their mechanical bodies to stay alive. (The maintenance scene happens
shortly after she kills the diplomat. It's the one where she's floating
around in the water and stuff.)
Of course a cyborg doesn't menstruate, and Kusanagi knows it. She's making
a wry joke about how she used to have her period, but now that her body is one
big machine, something else happens once a month. The more things change...
Sheesh. Please tell me I'm not the only one who got this...

I don't own any of the manga. I flipped a couple of pages of the
tankoban once several years back at AnAm 95. And yes, when Motoko and
Togusa are talking on the boat they mention it.

It's an Oishii film, anything's possible... I think it makes more sense
if it's scheduled maintenance, though.

Oh, and I really think this thread is losing relevance to anime.
I seriously doubt it.

Because, they aren't nearly as boring as this one. The point I'm
trying to make with my "peanut butter in anime" spoof post is that
there are some things that are just so trivial and irrelevant, why
would you even bother? I'm serious here; can you tell me one time
when mensturation was relevant to the plot of an anime? Even once?
It's like peanut butter - there's absolutely no relevance at all.
If I see any thread that I feel is boring and irrelevant, I'll lampoon
it. I don't care if it's a "girl thing" or not. I've picked on the Sailor
Moon and Ranma and Dragon-and-on-and-on-Ball boring threads many a time,
and I'll pick on any other boring thread too, if I feel like it.
How about taking your own advice, Nora? If you don't like my
contributions to a thread, why don't you ignore me? Or are YOU
perhaps a bit insecure about this topic?
Methinks you doth protest too much. Go put your white horse back in

you to play "supportive mommy figure" for them.
In sum, take your self-righteous 'tude and shove it.

It flew over my head. If you're not intimately familiar with the manga,
you're not going to know about the monthly required maintenance until
you're told about it later. (If at all. When in the movie was the monthly
maintainance explained?)
As for the opening scene, I had always believed it was a flashback to
Kusanagi's creation as a cyborg. I mean, they show her being put together,
the skin being added and everything. The BGM track is even called "Making
of Cyborg".

Who cares if it's relevant to the plot of the anime? I want to know
because it's relevant to some doujinshi I've been reading lately,
particularly relevent to me as a fan of shoujo and josei anime, and
symbolically relevant to a fanfic I read a while back. Just because
it's not directly relevant to you and whatever kind of anime you watch
doesn't mean it's not relevant to anyone else.

Not possible. Your self-righteous 'tude's been around for a while, you
enjoy tossing it about a great deal, and I can't logically see you
putting it away for any reason, so why should I put away mine?
Maybe it's just me, but if I'm bored by a thread, I ignore it or kill
it. Flamebaiting, trolling, and the like are, generally, a great deal
more boring to me than even the most tiresome discussions on this
newsgroup---but then I guess everybody's got their own tastes. I think

a jacket or something -- and all the while holding a piece of toast in
her mouth (not on the side, but on one of the corners)." It happened
with the alternative workld Rei in EVA #26 (as someone mentioned
previously), and it also happened in the FY OVA 2 first episode with
Miaka. Also in Miyuki-Chan in Wonderland I believe...probably with Usagi
in Sailor Moon although I couldn't possibly remember the episode. There
are numerous other examples which escape me at the moment, but I guess
it's one of those subtler anime conventions.

Actually, it's specifically stated -turning thirteen- is the year witches leave
home. BUT, I always read Kiki's "flu" and temporary loss of her powers as the
beginning of her period(s).
It would certainly explain the moodiness, her waffling on Tombo (that was the
boy's name, right? you'd think as many times as I've watched Kiki with the
kids...).
Actually, I think it's an interesting thread. It's certainly less disgusting
than the one on how "hot" little girl characters will be as adults.

When I first read the manga, I assumed that the line was just her
having some fun with her co-workers. Even if she does get periods
dosen't mean she was having one then, just using it as an excuse :)

Burnt toast appears in the opening theme to Marmalade Boy. Also, Yuu

But not burnt. Probably.

I could of sworn she had just flown all night in the rain to deliever some food

Yes, there was the flying in the rain, but once she was -better-, she didn't
have her powers. That's what I read as the beginning of her period. Should have
been more specific, sorry.
I doubt Kiki loses her powers with the onset of each period. I have a
feeling that's something her mother would have told her before she left, and
she obviously didn't see this coming.
However, it could be that a witch loses her powers with her first period. I
find this unlikely, though, since their loss is preceded not by the 'flu'
but by a serious lack of confidence, and she returns when she needs them to
save Tombo's life, and is to occupied with his danger to be depressed. Her
powers seem (to me) tied to her mental state, rather than her physical
state.

Seems about right. I interpreted it as a more general "growing up"
but I think that's sort of implied.
Guess Lina and Kiki have something in common, then.^_^

I don't already.
Arnold Kim
doesn't trust things that bleed for a week and not keel over
Dunno if it's relevant to something Japanese-created, but it's a common
idea in many cultures that have myths or beliefs in "magic" that
magic-using women become more powerful during their periods---to the
point that their abilities become too powerful to control, or dangerous
to others, and they're prohibited from doing magic at that time. The
first and last periods being the *most* powerful ones. So maybe
Miyazaki and whoever created Slayers was making a nod to this. Maybe
Kiki didn't so much lose her powers as lose the ability to control them
at that time.

Don't forget about Rei.
She mentions it in the 14th episode during her poem "She is the woman
who does not bleed" is a reference to her lack of menstruation and one
of the first clues signaling that she is different.

There are all kinds of weird superstitions related to the matter in
question. How about this one: in some branches of Orthodox Chirch
women are not allowed in church during their periods, because they
are considered spiritually unclean. Or this one (my favourite): women
shouldn't make preserves, pickles, etc. during their periods - because
the food will spoil!

I honestly don't think that Kiki's problem had anything to do with
the physical side of things. IMHO, it was purely emotional - she
just had to believe in herself and thereby regain control of her power.

I've heard that from older women in my own family, and we're definitely
not Orthodox Jews. ^_^ It's an old Southern superstition too. But
I've heard worse. One of the justifications for female genital
circumcision, in those cultures which practice the most radical version
of it (cutting off everything between the outer labia, sewing it up
except for a hole for urination and menstruation), is that menstruation
is dangerous to women. It opens them up to possession by evil spirits,
which are more attracted to her at this time. So they get sewn up to
protect them from this danger. Theoretically a woman could learn to
harness and control these spirits rather than a) get possessed, or b)
get sewn up, but "witchcraft," as it's called, is punishable by death in
most cases. Fun, fun, fun. Good thing Kiki didn't grow up *there.*

Oh, I agree---I think that was made very clear. I just meant her brief
loss of her powers before she left home, due to the "flu."
It is possible that Orthodox Jews have some regulations on that matter,
too, but I was talking about Orthodox Christians. I always thought that
some of those strange superstitions were the remnants of paganism of
eastern Slavs, but if it is an old Southern superstition too, it must
be rooted in old Christianity. Interesting.

Sounds really terrible. And dangerous (for women's physical health, for
one thing). No wonder it is illegal in most countries.

After Sana acknowledges Rei's love for his girlfriend, Asuko, Sana and Rei-kun head over to her
home.
Sana tells Asuko she accepts their relationship and is breaking her own love ties to Rei.
Asuko and Rei had previously agreed that they would get back together when Sana was mature
enough. Asuko whispers a question to Sana asking if she has had the rice dish (beginning with
'O') yet, since she's speculating that Sana's period brought on Sana's new-founded 'maturity.'
Sana reveals that she had done so six months to a year before (I'm not sure.)
