I am contemplating ditching my cable tv (mostly because by local outlet does
not carry Cartoon Network or SciFi), and switching to DirectTV or Dish
Network. I've noticed that both satellite networks carry a pay cable
channel called "Japan TV" (or "Star Japan TV"), which is billed as a channel
that provides "current Japanese programs" for dish customers.

Does anyone have this service? If so, how much anime or related programming
is on it? Do you consider it worth the monthly fee (about $25.00/mo) to
have?

Just wondering.

I've got Japan TV via cable and I've never seen
any anime on it. It seems to be only news, drama,
sports (a lot of Sumo) and a couple of game shows
^_^. The commercials have been replaced with
commercials directed at Japanese Americans - so
you don't get too much crazy Japanese advertising
either.

I've been looking to get something like NECO or
WOWOW over here, but there don't seem to be any
satellites over North America that carry Japanese
content other than Japan TV.

I'd love someone to prove me wrong on this...

I'm over in the Philippines and my cable provider _USED_ to carry
something called JET TV. It showed old and new doramas, cop shows,
game shows (caught some Iron Chef), variety shows (including a couple
of risque ones :) and anime. Of course the anime was more of the
Doraemon and Chibi Maruko-chan kind of shows.

Since this channel was aimed for audiences outside Japan most of the
shows (of whatver kind) was dubbed into English.

Now I get my anime fix daily on AXN and WOWOW.

TVJapan is mostly NHK programming, it has virtually no anime. It requires a
second dish and a second decoder since it is broadcast on a different satellite
than regular programming. TVJapan only available on the Dish network.

So would I, but I believe the problem is that the satellites that carry
those networks are too low over the horizon for most continental U.S.
dish receivers. Hawaii and Alaska, however, in theory might be able to
get them, but not those of us in the midwest.

Damn.

Lucky. :-)

P.S. -- Miles Rules. Now wouldn't THAT be a nifty anime series?

No, the same "decoder" works with both dishes. Dish Network recievers can
have up to three satellite dishes connected to them.

Well, I certainly think so too!! Animated maybe the way to go
for as there are almost no actors who are generally Miles' size
plus what about Taura, Bel, quaddies?

Also, since Oliver Reed is already dead he can't play Aral anymore.
(Reed was how Lois imagined Aral looking like.)

Well, I also get NHK BS1 and BS2 and I remember a feature where some
expat Japanese civil engineers in Fiji or thereabouts being able to
see the NHK satellites.

Not to mention such places as Cetaganda, Jackson's Whole, Barrayar...

You know, I can see that. Personally, I've always thought the perfect
person to play Miles would have been Michael J. Fox when he was
younger...

Well, we can dream, I suppose. Who knows. Maybe SciFi Channel will
commission a series.

Since Fiji is still in the same area as Japan longitude-wise, I'm not
surprised they could still pick it up. Hawaii is not too far east that the
satellites in question are beyond reach, but I'm told that from that
vantage point they are low to the horizon, and hence difficult to lock on
to (but not impossible). From the U.S. west coast they are at best a few
degrees above the horizon, which makes it next to impossible to lock on due
to interference. Over here in the midwest US, they are quite literally on
the other side of the planet to us. Unless someone (for whatever reason)
has set up a satellite relay of those cable channels to serve other parts
of the globe, it is unlikely we'll be able to get them any time soon.

Pity.

Hmmm.... The thought of the little admiral on our screen...

I LIKE it...
