Fifteen year old orphan moe-blob Kanata was inspired by a soldier girl with a
trumpet to become a bugler in the Signal Corps. She is assigned to an isolated
outpost located in an abandoned castle in a backwater town. There she runs into
super bitchy moe-blob soldier Rio, and finds out that Rio is a skilled
trumpeter. Kanata is thrilled by this because her bugle playing truly ļæ½blowsļæ½
and she is in terminal need of lessons.
Besides being an incompetent musician, Kanata is also an idiot and almost kills
herself several times in the first episode. The near-death experiences do
nothing to improve Kanata's common sense or survival skills, but they do provide
an opportunity for the audience to look at her panties. This provides a
counterpoint to the repeated shots of Rio's cleavage.
Although I am not necessarily opposed in general to moe-blob anime (I liked
Kami-chu and Kanagi a lot), there has to be something about the characters and
the story to pull me into a moe-blob anime. Just watching ļæ½cute girls doing
stupid thingsļæ½ isn't usually enough to maintain my interest. And the first
episode of ļæ½So La Ti Doļæ½ didn't push any of the right buttons for me while it
pushed a number of the wrong buttons for me.
The animation, particularly the backgrounds, was sometimes very good, and other
times looked unfinished. The songs were instantly forgetable for me. The
characters turned me off. The story line blew my Analog-trained suspension-of-
disbelief out of the water. So I'm not going to follow this series any further.
But I bet that moe-blob fans will go absolutely nuts over this series.

I took offense at the rather blatant dislike of Moe and the references
to it.
If you don't like Moe, don't review it. Let someone else with plenty of
respect do the job.
Don't force yourself to like something you don't.

Erm, did you read the part in the review where he said he likes Kamichu!
and Kannagi? He doesn't hate moe anime in general, he just hates anime
that he (subjectively) feels is bad, like Sora no Woto. Also, you can be
assured he's not forcing himself to like anything. If he feels that an
anime has no redeeming features from the first ep, he drops it to devote
more time to stuff he likes, be it other anime titles or some time with his
family.

He didn't say that he doesn't like moe; he said that he doesn't like
moe-blob. There's a difference.
And DaveB appears to review the first episode of *everything*.

Unfortunately the moe-blob and fanservice anime, with no redeeming
quality aside from following a forumula of lolis, panty shots, upfronts,
and the usual tired fanservice cliches ("They had no writing budget
because they spent it all on virtual silicone and panties"), seems to to
be taking over the anime schedule on Japanese TV these days. I guess it
gets good DVD sales numbers in Japan, since sex sells, especially among
the pervier otaku that Japan has no lack of, but it's nothing more than
eye candy.
I'm tired of all the gratuitious panty shots and face-in-breast shots.
They are just so tired when not used in an obvious parody context. It's
like the anime equivalent of adding a laugh track.

It's comments like this that shows how much of a moron you really are.
David is an anime reviewer and will watch just about every show that
airs during each season. As a reviewer, he gives his opinions and
explains his what he likes or dislikes about a show. If YOU don't like
his opinions, then YOU shouldn't read his reviews.
What is ridiculous is the idea that reviewers should only review the
shows that they "like" or avoid certain genres that they may not care
for. I know that some fans can be pretty defensive. Moe fans in
particular are notorious of attacking reviewers who gives a negative
review about a moe show. In fact, the problem is so prevacive that even
Zac and Justin has gone off about it on ANNCast.

I hear you loud and clear, but it's not like that's the only type of anime
I'm seeking out. Right now I'm watching the DVDs of Narutaru - Shadow Star
which I scored a long time ago, but only got around to now. The main
characters are middle-schoolers, but the only bit of skin-type fan service
I've encountered so far came off as unnerving more than prurient, given the
context it was in. I read most of the manga of this, so I knew what I was
in for when I dropped the cash for it--a story that starts out a bit cute
but gets progressively darker.

I think that oftentimes the so-called "anime critics" tend to bash moe
shows just for the sake of feeling superior to the average otaku. (I'm
not talking about Dave now).
Speaking of Sora no Woto, I think it's definitely too early to say
that it's a show about nothing, since the post-war background may
provide some interesting drama. And the songs in the first episode
were all good except for the ending IMHO.

Actually Rob, nowadays I don't bother with the first episodes of sequels
to series when I didn't like the original series. So there are usually a
number of new series each season that I don't bother with. This helps to
keep my viewing time within reason.
But I still try to see all of the new non-sequel series, even if I suspect
that they may not be to my liking, because I am usually surprised once or
twice each season with new series that catch my attention when I wasn't
expecting it.

I can recall one panty shot, when she was with Rio on the balcony of her
home. And having boobs equals shots of cleavage it seems, cause they really
didn't pay much attention to that.

Hmmm - blank post... Sorry - I've still got to get used to this newsreader...
Arnold, I went into the first episode expecting something like "K-On visits

series you may well like this one.

The only mention I remember in K-ON! is in that beach episode. Juubei-chan

In the few cases when women are portrayed as being into punk or metal, it's
always been for laughs (like Sawako Yamanaka in K-ON!). So far, the
closest is Nana Ozaki in Nana, and even then, she's no Polly Harvey or
Diamanda Galas. Hell, Kathleen Hanna would probably eat her alive.

Next up is breakfast, where Kanata is officially introduced to the other
platoon members:
- Felicia, the meganekko^Wsquad leader.
- Kureha, the tsunderekko^Wtank gunner.
- Noel, the indispensable silent character^W^W^Wtank pilot and mechanic.
After breakfast Kanata is shown around the fort by Kureha, who takes the
opportunity to tries to establish her seniority over Kanata. The "tour de
fort" also includes the partly disassembled tank of the squad. Which
made me wonder: how the heck did that thing get there when the fort is
connected to the town by a narrow bridge that's little more than a
catwalk?
When Noel reports that she has discovered a ghost in one of the
buildings, Kureha and Kanata are sent in on a reconnaissance mission.
However, they don't discover much besides a run-down building and a
bunch of rats. The supposed ghost turns out to be an owl, which is taken
in as the squad's mascot after being wounded by a bullet that Kureha
fires in a panic attack.
All in all not much new in this episode. The scenery was nice, the girls
were cute, but nothing really stood out in any way. Except for the squad
being the least military military unit I've ever seen, perhaps.
I'm still undecided whether this is worth my while or not.

You didn't pick up on many clues about this post-apocalyptic world.
Kureha said that even the biggest school in the Capital doesn't have
that many students, implying that the population is dwindling.
They couldn't read old school books written in Japanese; Kanata also
said that music is currently only taught in the army (and this
explains why she enrolled). They also looked at a map which showed
that Seize is near a so-called No Man's Land.
I am liking all this little tidbits about the Sora-no-Woto world. They
got me intrigued.

Relax. It's the going thing in this among the blowhards on this group (and

Sit back and enjoy the series. I certainly intend to.

True. However, legs or not, that is still one fragile-looking bridge.

Interesting thought. Kureha calls it "a treasure from the past", so that
is a definite possibility.

It's not that I didn't pick them up, but rather that I considered them
negligeable, since there was little more than what you described above.
Small, rather illiterate populace, and a fortress that doesn't really
have anything to defend against. Perhaps I should have mentioned the
latter part, but I found the location rather fitting for an un-military
squad like that, so I left it at that.

hard luck.

Got to admit it, but I only just heard of the term "moeblob" myself
recently when somebody mentioned it in passing. It certainly gave me a
giggle, especially as it seems that there is some room for
misinterpretation. Always good for triggering a good argument, is that!
As for Sora no Woto, I've seen the first ep. so far and I get a distinct
feeling of deja-vu. It seems a bit formula. I can recognise some of the
charas as almost identical copies from other shows, themselves being
copied to the extent that they might be considered characature. However
one ep. isn't enough for me to go on, especially with the habit of
misdirection that anime has these days. I suspect that "moeblob", in and
of itself, may be insufficient to describe the cast. We shall see, shan't
we?

As a mere "cute girls" show the anime would be fine, but in my book
"cute girls" and military simply don't mix. It might be different if
there were any noticeable progress regarding the "Fire Maiden" legend,
but I fail to see any. Right now it's just a run-off-the-mill "cute
girls doing stupid things" show, and IMO the characters worked *way*
better in "K-ON!".
Final rating: 6/10
Whereas I'm still enjoying it. The military needs more cute girls.
