Yes. I can think of a lot of shows where the romance is handled a lot
better than the "let's contrive yet another reason for Miaka and Tamahome
to break up/not get be together/etc" crap that passes for "romance" in that
show... Despite being kids, Sana and Hayama have a far more mature

picked Kodocha.

I don't know if they've even made a box set of it in Japan yet. As it is

Is it time I got to work?
You sure ADV isn't sitting on it? :)
I havent't seen this show yet, but I pick FY because that very style of
their over-the-top problem relationship is more interesting on screen than a
more realistic or possibly more mature relatioship. It's fantasy and I think
what they did just works...

Is it time I stopped trying to come up with a new line every post?
That's a song that XTC released as a single, from their last album _Wasp
Star_. It's a great song and I'd love to make an anime music video to it,
but I can't really think of an anime that would go well with the lyrics:

I can't even afford that at this point in time, to be honest. I'm just
saying that they can take their $50 CAN DVDs and shove them up sideways,
while I pick up the ones that ADV and CPM (amongst others) did well for
only $35 and sometimes even less when funds permit.

>>I still recommend *not* getting Viz's Working Designs, Part Ledoux version.

I'm laid back whenever the slang and cultural references are not so
blatantly grafted on, sometimes to the detriment of the original meanings
and even the original script ("It doesn't bother you that I have feelings
for your big brother, does it, Ai?"). As it is, Trish Ledoux, I'll find
an interesting curse to place on you. Like waking up and finding yourself
unable to speak any language that can be understood by anybody on Earth,
and thus having to live out the rest of your life scrubbing out toilets.

Well, that's your opinion. I thought it got boring and repetitive really
quick. And the fact that it took time away from what I felt were some far
more interesting characters didn't help.

Berserk (what little there is), Vision of Escaflowne and
Revolutionary Girl Utena. Berserk is worlds away from the
extremely romantic settings of the other two but each one does
justice to their respective fantasy setting. Utena has the
artistic flair and imagination, Escaflowne has the world design
and almost high fantasy atmosphere, Berserk rules the harsh,
dark fantasy landscape. All three shows have plenty of scheming
and intrigue to further the story. Oh yeah I almost forgot to
mention Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust-gorgeous graphics that
succesfully combines disparate elements of gothic horror, sci-fi,
fantasy quest and westerns.

Angel Sanctuary was far too condensed and ditched a number of
things, so X gets my Shoujo bid from default. Thinking back
I also really like the ethereal, elegant horror of Vampire
Princess Miyu the OVAs-it seems aimed at a shoujo fanbase so
I give a nod here. Hmm somehow I think I'm missing the point

I'd go with Bible Black. The only other one I've seen is Overfiend.
Bible Black benefits from a lack of tentacles and rape scenes, high
quality artwork that has good looking characters that actually look
like they're young adults rather than prepubscents with implants and
so far there seems to be a story developing.

Seems shoujo has gotten better about that, esp. with this new upsurge of
'Bishoujo' anime which often just avoids that road...

In no small part that Sana & Hayama are not so much a declared 'couple'
(even with the occasional mushy bits, it's a basic 'needful things'
relationship right up to #102) compared to some other characters. Doing THAT
usually kills off any nice character interaction under the basic law of 'If
you have to *tell* the audience something repeatedly, you probably aren't
showing it right'.
[I'm still annoyed for example, way back in Sailor Moon R when Mamoru's
personality got so well developed because Plot Contrivance actually caused a
Getting To Know You period a lot of anime tends to avoid.]

Giant Robo is an anime in the giant robot genre. It's also a dramatic
masterpiece and has a very good soundtrack.
It's currently being sat on by manga.

For "Abenobashi" I'd suggest that Dave Baranyi's posted reviews
be edited down, I can't do any better. For "Robin", how's this:
(If anybody knows the name of the group that do the OP & ED, I'd
like to put that in also.)
- dbm
=================================
WITCH HUNTER ROBIN: (after 15 episodes) In recession-hit modern
Japan, a mysterious group called "STN-J" hunts and captures criminal
magic-users. Into the group is transferred a young woman named Sena
Robin. Coming from Europe, she is dourly dressed, has a mysterious
background, and has powers similar to those of the people the group
hunts. The group could use some help, as morale is low due to unspoken
recent events and ineffective management. Robin, a surprisingly
sweet-tempered 15 year old despite her harsh upbringing, has some
learning to do before she can be of much use. She may also be
fronting for a faction opposed to STN-J. And just what are STN-J
doing with their witches after they are captured?
The series has a very dark, foreboding, humorless feeling. It is
colored almost entirely in black, brown and gray, without even the
flashes of gleeful saturated color that come through in, e.g.,
"Hellsing". The character cel animation is outstanding, with
detailed, naturalistic designs. Much of the grimy urban cityscape is
rendered in 3D CG. This works rather well - it's vastly better than,
say, "Vandread", almost on par with "Hoshi no Koe", and blends well
with the cel animation. The writing is subtle and deft. We learn a
lot about the characters of the protagonists through their "normal"
daily interaction, without recourse to contrived explanatory dialog.
Most episodes are focused on dialog and investigation, actual violence
is brief and not especially graphic.
The first third of the series is deceptively episodic. As STN-J
struggles to track its targets the characters grow on us almost
unnoticed, until the second third of the series when the major
story-arc kicks in with a vengeance and the secrets of STN-J - and
Robin herself - begin to play out. This business of witches being
hunted down & killed recalls some bitter episodes in Western history,
and sets an expectation of extreme moral ambiguity upon which the
series is delivering well so far.
Recommended for those who like "Blade Runner", Lance Henrickson's
"Millennium", the "X-Files". The alt-rock OP, ED and BGM are highly
recommended also.
"Robin", from Sunrise, started broadcast on TV Tokyo in July 2002.

In North America, not much. In Japan, "giant robots" would be a subset
of "mecha", in that any show that focuses on the mechanical items would
be a mecha show. (In a way, "Gunsmith Cats" is mecha, because they pay
close attention to the pistols, cars, and explosives...)

If you were an artist, would you want to draw ugly people all the time?
Actually I find ugly and older people more interesting to draw
than pretty types. Easier, also, since attractive people have
"regular" features and thus tend to look somewhat similar.
- dbm
All giant robots are mecha but not all mecha are giant robots. The
real distinction is between Giant Robot (also known as Super Robot) and
Real Robot.
Giant Robot/Super Robot shows typically emphasize power. The piloting
of the this particular mech is often not focused on in much detail and
is rather "unrealistic"-for instance the pilot might move a couple of
joysticks up and down. Giant Robots are giants and often have godlike
power if they are not gods themselves. Even the weakest Giant Robot
can easily decimate the conventional forces of their respective cartoons,
the only real threats are other super robots, giant monsters, powerful
aliens and gods. Examples of Giant Robot would be Big O, Evangelion
for the most part, the video game Xenogears, Mazinger Z, Gundam Wing
and etc.
Real Robot strongly emphasize that the robot is essentially one amongst
many. It is a useful tool but can be harmed by conventional forces and
really depends on the pilot's skill rather than the mecha's powers.
Also the actual piloting of the mech is shown in loving detail. Note
that Real Robot may not necessarily have to be hard science. Escaflowne
would be a Real Robot-it's one of the best mechs in that world but any
other guymelef poses a real threat, the piloting is shown in loving
detail-focus is shown on the clockwork gears in motion as they replicate
the movement of Van manipulating the individual controls of Escaflowne
and finally the skill of Van and Allen is what really sets them apart
from the rest not their guymelefs. Sometimes Real Robots are really
big but many are only somewhat larger than man-sized and none of them
tower over skyscrapers. Real Robots would be Votoms, Macross, Gundam,
Escaflowne, Gasaraki, Blue Gender and etc.
What we have here is a failure to communicate.

There's that yeah; Makoto is a little more forthright with making decisions.
Makoto also seems a little more naive than Tenchi. (I can also kinda buy why
his 'fanclub' of girls likes him a little easier.)
It doesn't hurt that Nabara's obsession with Kazuya seems a LOT like
Jennai's with Makoto.

I should prolly be more specific. A lot of Male Leads in these kinds of
shows are supposed to be protrayed as geeky-looking and unattractive. This
is actually hard to do given the easiest way to draw a character seems to be
'nicelooking' so you get a lot of generic looking characters.
Kazuya by comparsion is downright _handsome_ (IIRC, people in TenchiMuyo say
Tenchi is too) compared to some of the more stock versions of his character.
Maybe it's due to the inherent Shininess of HHM's artstyle.
It doesn't turn up used very often in Ottawa because, in a place like
this, if you spend a lot of money on something, you tend to want to keep
it. I have had a few strokes of luck, though, like the first two tapes of
Devil Hunter Yohko turning up as ex-rentals in the local branch of a
discount store for $3.33 CAD each. Blagged those, and they turned out to
be in excellent shape. I then bought the second DVD, thus getting the
whole series for less than $50 CAD. Plus the first two volumes of Black
Heaven, Tenamonya Voyagers (fix the goddamned sticking subs already,
Bandai!) and one of the volumes of Outlaw Star. A pox on the knob who
grabbed the three DVDs of Key the Metal Idol before I could, though.
