This will be the marquee event for Moonies across the
continent in 1998 as Naoko Takeuchi makes her first major public
appearance in North America. While the ink on the paperwork is not
yet dry, it's enough of a solid bet that Mixx has gone ahead with
mentioning her appearance on their website.

The San Diego Comic-Con International brings in tens of
thousands of enthusiasts in the industry each and every year. Its

Keep your eyes peeled on the guest list for Naoko's name when
she's finally been confirmed.

ARGGHH!! The day after my brithday... hmm I wonder if my parents will
send me to the USA for a birthday present? :)

Well she can read it, and since she has taken vacations in America
before, I think it would be safe to assume that she can speak English
well enough to get along.

Don't buy your ticket just yet. "Looking to bring" isn't actually
confirmation of an actual visit.

True enough, although this is one instance where a 'looking to
bring' is realized in short order. It has now been confirmed (by
Mixx, at any rate) that Naoko Takeuchi will indeed be in attendance
at the San Diego Comic-Con International this coming August.

True. I've managed to hear a lot from our Guest Relations guy for BAKA!-Con,
and he's been trying to get us an Japanese guest... not an easy thing to do.
(They got busy schedules.)

Hopefully the bootleggers will be smart enough not to bring their Sailor
Moon stuff to that one. ^_^

Of course, I once saw the booth behind Viz's booth selling bootleg Fatal
Fury tapes, so I wouldn't count on common sense from pirates.
I wonder how available Naoko will be. Rumiko Takahashi did one panel and
one autograph signing. The latter was a ticketed event, which generated
some problems (dealers grabbing tickets) and bad feelings.
Given a limit of 1-2 things (highly likely) what will you get signed?

It might well be a pleasant delusion to contemplate Naoko
Takeuchi visiting everyone's hometown, however realistically speaking
she has a busy schedule and it's a treat to have her appear in any
kind of public capacity in North America. The venue might not be
ideal for everyone, but you couldn't choose a place that would keep
everybody satisfied.
As for Anime North, whom they seek out as special guests (and
the ones they had last year were hardly special, although the event
itself was certainly a blast) is up to the organizational committee.
Nobody can speak for them, however it's quite possible that there are
quite a number of big name guests whom they could more easily afford
or whom they'd rather have on their guest roster.
Furthermore, I think it's quite clear that Mixx and Naoko
Takeuchi are looking towards grand scale mainstream industry
expositions to showcase their product to the masses. Otherwise she'd
be appearing at AnimeExpo or Anime Central... not the San Diego
Comic-Con International on August 13-16.
Would Naoko like Toronto? I'm sure she would... the locale
boasting arguably the most concentrated Sailor Moon fanbase on the
continent due to the show's mainstream success and presence
throughout Canada.
However, it's not as simple as you've made it out to be.
How about Otakon97 in Washington DC area, Aug 7-9?
In the backyard is the.....
Smithsonian Air and Space Museum, and the NASA exhibits.
Anime Expo is the largest anime con with 3500+ attendence last year.
BUT, you need a 10,000+ attendance for guests like
Naoko or Takahashi. SDCC is it.
>Given a limit of 1-2 things (highly likely) what will you get signed?
Hmm... Both those things (but particularly the first) kinda show off the sad
state of fan-celebrity relations these days.

First Rumiko Takahashi, now this. I'm beginning to think that I've been
living on the wrong coast for my entire life.^_^
