Finally! All the votes have been counted, and the 1997 R.A.A Favorites
Poll is once and for all “in the books”.

I’ve noticed a pattern developing in the Poll over the last few years. The
people who vote first tend to vote in exciting, different ways. The later
voters tend to vote for the old standbys. In the early stages, it looked
like this years poll was going to be full of upsets, but by the end, most
of the regulars were back near the top. Not all of them though. Be
prepared for some surprising results.

One thing I’d like to point out: you may notice that some of the vote
totals seem lower than last year, even though about the same number of
people voted. This is due to the fact that somewhere between 30% and 50%
of the voters didn’t use their second votes! I can only assume that people
didn’t read the instructions (which is usually a pretty safe assumption).

For the second time since the poll began, WINGS OF HONNEAMISE won Favorite
Movie by just a single vote. This was a come-from-behind victory of the
highest order. Earlier in the poll, WINGS was getting its butt royally
kicked by NAUSICAA. It looked like WINGS wouldn’t even finish in the top
five, much less win. Then the votes for NAUSICAA dried up, and the votes
for WINGS began rolling in. Another notable finisher is the MACROSS PLUS
movie, which moved up from 19th to 4th.

It being the first year for this category, I was curious to see how it
would turn out. Serena of the much-maligned SAILOR MOON dub taking first?
How odd... I had to wonder *which* Serena the fans were voting for, since
most didn’t say. I remember the second voice did not get the high marks
from the fans as the first did. And how about this: Ryoko, from another
“hated” dub, beating performances such as Lina Inverse and Jinnai.

RANMA 1/2 has had several character designers, and I'm certain that Takada
did the designs for at least some of the anime.

Um....wouldn't consider NERV to be a villian, especially since people like
Shinji and Misato (who did NOT kill Kaji) help make up the orginazation. As

Heh. He's the villain, but right. Sort of like the ending to Rayearth, come to
think of it; most noble person in the entire fragging Cefiro was the bad boy
priest Zagato. Methinks Anno put the stereotype on its head and nobody listened.

Okay... Rayearth, first season anyway, is a fairly decent story about three girls
who get sucked into another dimension and recruited (by a funny short magician
with a huge purple horn in the middle of his forehead, no less) to become
<english> "Magic Knights" and save the other world (Cefiro) from destruction.
It's heavily implied that said destruction is the responsibility of one Priest
Zagato... who has captured the Princess, whose prayers are all that keeps the
world together. The three kids acquire a bouncy sidekick (Mokona!) and set off.
It looks like an RPG... heck they even SAY it looks like an RPG. They dispose
of/befriend all of the evil or not so evil minions of Zagato, only to find that
he's doing all of this because the Princess and he are in love and the Magic
Knights have to kill the Princess so that the world can pick a new (presumably
not quite so lovey dovey) "pillar" for prayers and such.

Eva's like that.

Thats kinda how it works, actually. Nobody ever said the results were
scientific. KIMAGURE ORANGE ROAD does well in the poll because KOR fans
tend to be better organized and more vocal. In the past, that's been true
of RANMA fans as well, but they seemed pretty quiet this time around.

Indeed. The first series was Takada, IIRC; you can tell by the way the
eyes of the characters look. Nakajima's eyes are "pointier".

You're not alone. Actually, I'm pretty indifferent to the fonts; but I
know other people who really dislike the Tomodachi fonts. In fact, wasn't
that what (indirectly) caused the brouhaha a while back, when someone was
using Tomodachi's scripts to re-sub the series, since they didn't like
the artsy fonts?

IIRC, Nakajima changed the character designs for the second movie, but she did
them throughout the series' run.

However, I do believe Takada did the UY chara designs, so there was some
influence.

DON'T get that started again! Oh, well... I saw the Central version at Akon 8
last year (just had to see the end...) and still got the Tomodachi version. I've
gotta say that I like the font, although once your tape gets on in generations,
it really hurts the subbing faster. (Of course, this is not a problem... since
every distribution place in existence, almost, has Tomodachi masters!)

I don't know if you're in the minority, but you're definitely
not alone in your opinion. My rule of subtitling is that the titles

Say what? Nowhere _close_! Zagato was willing to sacrifice an entire world
for the sake of his selfish love to Emeraude: how does that make him the most
noble person on the planet? _Emeraude_ was the person who, realizing the
existence of her own selfish love for Zagato, tried to sacrifice her own life
so that Cephiro wouldn't suffer: _that_ is what I might call noble.

I think plenty of people listened: a lot of them may not have liked what they
heard. I, at least, was fine by it...

*sigh* Let's try again. The _actual_ reason that Emeraude decided to destroy
herself is that her position as Hashira required her to put the welfare of
Cephiro uppermost in her thoughts. If she could not, Cephiro would begin to
decay. When she realized that she was in love with Zagato, she also realized
the danger the world was in, and took the only way out, which was to summon
the Magic Knights from "another world" to kill her (since the Hashira cannot
wish directly for its own downfall). Zagato, (selfishly) not wanting to see
Emeraude die, set about "defending" her and impeding the Magic Knights; it
didn't help that his managerial style as regent wasn't very diplomatic.

How so?

Good point... noble wasn't the right word. Still, with every other stereotype in
there, it was really nice to have the ultimate enemy be fighting for... well, "love
and justice" you could say.

Yeah, it was ONE good way to end the series.

Gendo. He knows what's going on... both SEELE's goals and what's actually happening at
NERV, which diverges considerably after episode thirteen. You already know why, I take
it, that SEELE is doing the whole Human Instrumentality/Completion project... else you
need more spoiling than I am ready to do just for one analogy... Gendo can't stop
SEELE, knows that if he tries, they'll squash him and NERV like bugs. He CAN do
something, though... maybe manage to prevent the destruction of all humanity, maybe
make the thing work in the first place... either way, he's playing with every life on
the planet.

I always thought it was Nakajima all the time, except she changed her style
as the series progressed.

And that's why I hate Gerard Jones translations. That's also a general rule of
interpreting, and just about any kind of professional translation that exists.
