I was just passing by the www.geekcode.com site, and I just wondered... Is
there an anime code like that? I looked on Altavista, but all I got were
irrelevant links. If not, I think I've just decided to make one... Feel free
to send your suggestions to the newsgroup or to me at
charl...@duke.edu... I've already got a few ideas for items: time spent,
anime clubs, newsgroups, web page publishing, IRC channels, level of
Japanese understanding, manga, hentai/ecchi, conventions, fanfics, shoujo
preference, shounen preference, dub/sub, musical level, merchandise owned...

of can of worms I may have opened here...)

There is one developed by Sue Shambaugh [sp]. I have it as part of a
limited filk/parody fanzine she made a few years ago. I've been meaning to
scan/type it up for a while now, but I haven't really had the time. Plus I
don't know if she'd be too keen on my doing that...

There's a "Moonie Code" for fans of "Sailor Moon" (see my sig). Other than
that, none that I can think of.

Can this code be found on the web? Is there a URL for this one?

Hmmm... Okay, so I'm starting to come up with an idea of the general
structure for this one.

On the subject of special notation for anything you feel is particularly
worth of note, I was thinking of a line of the code for any special
notations. (I doubt if anyone would feel that LEAST favorite series deserve
mention here unless you REALLY abhor it and can't stand people who like
it....) Each series has a short alphanumeric code for its abbreviation, and
then you can put the notation by it, such as:

MKR++ EVA? SiMo(+++) DBZ---

Most of these codes would already be in common use on r.a.a.m and all the
other newsgroups, and I would assume IRC channels and such as well...

Also, I wanted to put in some way to mention favorite characters and seiyuu
as well (and for this, it would just be a short list), since I know quite a
few people would use that, but I can't figure out any way to do that using
only a few characters...

(Also, it's surprised me how few people have responded...)

Hi, Charles!

The MoonieCode would be an excellent 'starting point' for the attempted
creation of an AnimeCode, but if you've seen how inclusive and complicated
the Sailormoon portion of the MoonieCode can become (after five years and
scores of characters), attempting to create one that could concievably cover
a sizeable portion of anime may be well-nigh-impossible (and possibly be ten
lines long!)?

Let's see someone decode that one. The scary part is, I'll bet at least
half a dozen people can figure it out on sight.

That was indeed one of my first thoughts upon looking at the "Moonie Code,"
but I thought about it a little bit... I think the anime code (or would
"otaku code" be a better name?) has a different focus. It's more about your
standing in fandom. I mean, just look at the items listed thus far. Fans of
each series could come up with their own codes as needed, but I think the
anime code is really a reflection of dedication and standing in fandom...
Much like the Moonie Code, I would restrict how many "favorites" you can
list in that last line.

And I thought of something else I would want to add... an initial note of
specialization, like within the geek code. For example, in the geek code,
the first thing is what type of geek you are, such as Geek of Engineering,
Geek of History, Geek of Medicine, etc. Perhaps if you're a fansubber or a
translator or a store owner, something where your primary source of income
is anime-related, or if you're an officer in a club...
