Without Words
The sun was set over the horizon and its warm rays fell over the whole of
Nerima. Akane glanced over at Ranma, who was on top of the fence and
sighed. They were on their way home from school, and they haven't said a
single word to each other since lunch.
Ranma jumped down from the fence when he saw Akane glance at him. He
walked beside her without a word and occasionally glanced around him. It
was unsettling in a way, how they were so quiet. Yet Ranma felt some kind
of peace settle over him knowing that things would go smooth from here. He
suddenly stopped when he noticed that he was walking alone. He turned
around and saw Akane kneeling in a small field of lavender flowers. He
casually walked to her, a smile growing on his face, "Hey Akane," she
looked up at him, a bright smile greeting him. Ranma stopped, the smile on
her face and the natural glowing of her eyes made him bite back the taunt
he was about to say, "uh, what are you doing there?"
Akane smiled and titled her head to the side, bringing a lavender
flower to her face. Time stopped and Ranma etched the scene in his mind. He
felt his heart stop and his mind whirled at the image before him. The wind
ruffled her hair as she looked at him and stood up, a sweet smile painting
her face. Ranma felt an urge to say something, to say what he felt, to
confess the feelings he hid, yet somehow, he knew he would stop in
mid-sentence and ruin everything. It was ironic, he thought, how words
could easily hurt a person and at the same time how it could show how much
you care for that someone. Akane's finger on his lips stopped him,
"You don't have to say anything..." she whispered.
Ranma could feel her soft fingers on his lips and smiled as she slipped
the flower on his ear, giggling at the sight. If only I had the guts to
tell her right now, Ranma thought. Instead, he returned her warmth in way
that he knew she would understand. He laughed with her and took her hand
while she fixed the flower on his ear. They stared into each other's eyes
and their laughter slowly faded with the silent movement of the wind.
Warmth and understanding flowed through the single look and the strength of
their feelings surfaced with the contented state they felt, just holding
each other's hands, not saying a word.
"Let's go home..." Ranma finally said, taking hold of Akane's hand as
they walked home. He left the flower resting on his ear and touched it once in
a while, remembering Akane's face while she held it up. The smile on her
face...the sweetness in her eyes...the glow that lighted her whole face
up...everything she was, Ranma cared for. Now, he felt he had an idea of
what love feels like...A friendship deep enough to hold, that words are not
needed to express what you felt. Silence still surrounded them, yet the
quietness wasn't as hollow as it used to be...

(Hours later...)
Akane woke up when she heard a slight rustling of cloth. She opened her
eyes and looked around her room. Her window was open and the curtain freely
moved with the wind's currents. She glanced over at her table and saw
something.
A beautiful pale lavender flower rested on the table, along with a
small piece of paper. Akane looked out the window at the bright moon, knowing
that the same person who left the flower was also looking up the same sky.
She picked up the flower as she read the piece of pink paper. She sighed
and left the note on the table, the lavender flower twirling in her hand.
She made her way up the to the roof and saw someone staring at the night
sky. Her hand reached out and she brought the flower to his ear, feeling
his hand cover hers.
In Akane's room, the note was on the table, on it was a simple phrase,
along with a name signed on the bottom,
'Without Words...'
