Act One: To Catch A Killer
____________________
"Name?" asked the interviewer. "Jenova Tendo." replied Kasumi. This was
her first job interview since she had been released. It was really something,
she considered, three months ago she was hacking locals into bite-sized
pieces and now, only two days after her release, she was trying to get a job.
Come to think of it, it was her first interview period. "Age?" asked the
interviewer. "Twenty One." replied Kasumi-Jenova, it was a lie, but not much
of an exaggeration. She was twenty, but twenty-one was age of majority so it
sounded more impressive. _____________
The dark clouds circled the Nerima Psychiatric Hospital. They cast large
shadows over the entire complex and rumbled unheard warnings. The snow
drifted through the air as Kasumi made the five hundred yard trek from the
main building to the front gate where a car was waiting for her. The clouds
knew something no one else did. The heavens knew what mortals would ignore.
The gate made a low grinding sound as the automated mechanism slowly withdrew
the iron bars from Kasumi's path. The cage had been opened. The tigers were
loose, free to make snacks of those who thought them harmless. Kasumi took
one last look back at the building and smiled. She also knew what no one else
knew. She knew the secret of the heavens: Jenova can't be killed.
_____________
"Previous experience?"
"Well..." began Kasumi-Jenova "Nothing professionally. But my family was
basically a group of invalids." (A lie? Maybe. But not by much.)
_____________
Everyone in the Tendo household shivered when the news came through, if
only for a split second. The fear that Kasumi would be "coming home" was
freaking them out. Their only comfort came from the fact that at least Ranma
was still locked away. It had been three months of dull pain that had
started to die. Genma was in mourning for Nadoka who had committed seppuku
herself after the third Nerima Massacre. Then there was the whole
embarrassment about how domestically impaired the Tendos were without Kasumi
and how they needed to ask Ukyo to move in with them just so they wouldn't
starve to death. They were almost willing to risk being horribly murdered in
their sleep for the sake of Kasumi's cooking. Nabiki had taken up smoking,
chain smoking apparently, because of stress. It was rare that anyone saw her
with a cigarette in her mouth and a bluish grey cloud of semi-translucent
smoke hovering about her like a ghost. Akane was somehow stuck in the middle
of all this. She didn't have any clue which way was up. Must've been how
Ryoga felt a good deal of the time. Ryoga was through with that though,
mainly because he was dead now. For Akane there were only two ways to escape
this emotional limbo: Jenova's death... or her own. _____________
"You seem just right for this job." said the interviewer standing up. She
shook Kasumi's hand. "Welcome to the staff of the Bates Hotel." _____________
Cologne sat in the darkness of the cafe and read the newpaper. Somehow the
darkness and the long shadows stretching from nowhere and going off to the
same place seemed appropriate considering the story she was reading. When
she was finished she folded up the paper and set it on the counter. She
wandered into the back room and retrieved an old antique box from the shelves
that contained her jewelry. She opened the box and retrieved a brooch with a
round green crystal. It was the reversal-jewel. "This may be our last hope."
she said quietly. _____________
"Where are you going?" the attendant asked. "Someone requested I deliver
this medication to patient..." the man paused to check his clipboard "Number
10-5-14-15-22-1-666." "You're not serious, I hope." said the attendant.
"It's right here." said the medicine man pointing to the clipboard. "You
have no idea who that is, do you?" the attendant led the man to a cell. "Take
a look." he said. The medicine guy peered through the window. In a corner of
the darkened cell was a red-headed young-girl, who sat naked with her knees
pulled up to her chest and a five pointed star pendant around her neck. He
couldn't see the girl's eyes. "She shouldn't be naked like that." the man
noted. "You wanna tell her different?" asked the attendant "That patient is
Ranma Saotome." The man took a couple of steps back on instinct. Ranma was
the equivalent of Hannibal Lecter in the Nerima Psychiatric Ward. She'd stay
in her cell but only as long as you didn't tell her what to do. At one point
they had tried to restrain her in straight jackets but that was about as
effective as putting a straight jacket on Houdini. _____________
Earlier in the day she had been visited by her shrink, Dr. Loomis. The
attendants had brought in chairs. Ranma-Jenova had been asked very politely
by Dr. Loomis to cover herself up. This caused Ranma-Jenova to snicker and
mutter something to the extent of "I always thought guys got a kick outta
seeing a beautiful naked girl." She got dressed in a white robe that made her
look like some kind of bizzare religious symbol. An angel perhaps. 'Angel,
my ass.' though Dr. Loomis. "So how are we today?" asked the doctor. "Not
too bad until you showed up on my doorstep." said Ranma-Jenova "So what
brings you're dumb ass down here. Run outta female patients to fuck in their
sleep?" "If you improved your attitude maybe you'd be able to get out of
here." said Dr. Loomis. "What's that supposed'a mean?" growled Ranma-Jenova
"Oh, I get it. This is some kinda fishin' for a bribe, right? If I fuck you
or somethin' I get out. Is that it." Ranma-Jenova smiled "No way. Though you
probably don't have enough in there to take a girl's virginity." She
snickered. She loved making cracks about the good doctor's manhod. "I mean
your attitude about therapy." said Dr. Loomis "Kasumi changed her attitude
and we released her just yesterday." A smile crossed Ranma-Jenova's face.
She started to snicker and giggle and then broke out laughing. "You're
kidding, right?" she said smiling between chuckles. "I am not."
Ranma-Jenova laughed again. "I can't believe she pulled it off!" she said "I
guess I owe her five thousand yen... and she gets to gut your sorry ass, not
me. How disappointing." "What are you talking about?" Ranma-Jenova smiled.
"You really don't get it, do you? You've been suckered, my friend. She played
you like a fiddle. C'mon what'd she say, hm?" "I don't understand." "Of
course, you don't." Ranma-Jenova said smiling "But you will."
