My friends and I are batting our heads over this one. What cartoon contained a
character who said, in a monotone voice (kinda like Ben Stein's), "It'll never
work. We're doomed."?

Some have suggested that it was the old Gulliver's Travels (the Fleischer one
from '39). I've watched it to see, and nope, it's not from that. Anybody
remember it?

You're on the right track. There was a liliputian name Glum from Hanna-Barbera's
New Adventures of Gulliver back in the late 60's. He spoke those very words and
was generally pessimistic about all of his cohorts (Eger, Bunko and Flirtacia)
attempts to help Gary Gulliver find his father.

Otter,

Many thanks! I think you've solved it!

(Now if I can only find a copy of the show, I'll be all set. Ever since Whole
Toon Catalog shut down, I've lost my favorite source of old animation...)

Whole Toon Catalog is still around Josh, just under different management.Facets
Multi-Media took over the catalog little more than a year ago. Check out the Facets
website [facets.org], I believe, and they'll mail you the latest Whole Toon catalog
(#13 was the last one I got back in April or May of this year.)

As for finding Gulliver there, not a chance. I'm waiting for Cartoon Network to
show it, maybe as a weekend late-night "serial" , instead of the wretched 70's-80's
drek they've got there now (who here would admit watching "The Gary Coleman Show"?)

I remember it was the really tall man that looked like frankinstein in Rocky and Bulwincle and friends when sherman and peabody would go back in the time machine and something would go wrong and they might not make it back or the gang was afraid to leave the large frankinstein looking character would say " It'll never work we're doomed"
