I suspect the rights to the original Toei shows expiried years ago. 'Jim
Terry' has really done nothing to continue the promotion of these shows.
There was that Microburst of home video releases in 1992 from Peter Pan
Industries/Parade Video, but that was it...
Hurm...OTOH, the 1992 video release may have been a 'keep the licenses in
question active' thing, which would explain why only one tape of each show
was released...just enough to show the license isn't defunct, and renew
the copyrights.
Who knows? Maybe Cartoon Network might pick it up after all!
*sigh* so hard to tell what's what nowadays...I thought that the only
reason CN was running Voltron was because of the Sony/Time/Warner buyout
of the Turner Networks...I *thought* Warner Bros. had bought Worldvision
(the Voltron owners) some years ago...so while on paper CN 'bought' the
show, it's really paper shuffling from one pocket to the other...
Again, I dunno...I get a headache trying to keep track of these things...

In 1993(?) Turner purchased Hanna-Barbera, which was owned by Spelling
Entertainment (which also owned Worldvision (no relation to the
religious orgainization)), though Turner's purchase is just for H-B;
Worldvision remains a subsidiary of Spelling, which, in turn is a
subsidiary of Blockbuster, which is a subsidiary of Viacom.
As for the purchase of Turner, only Time-Warner prurchased Turner; Sony
had nothing to do with it.

Hmmm... Do you think CN has any chance of picking up Tranzor Z or
Robotech? How about Star Blazers?

Tranzor Z? might happen, depends.
Robotech is (was) (will be) running on the Sci-Fi channel
Star Blazers...there's a whole, long, boring story here, that can be
summed up by 'No.' It would take an act of God and more money than *any*
cable network wants to spend to get Star Blazers broadcast at this point.
Oh, well...

Did I miss something? I thought Sony bought Time/Warner a few years
back...or did they back out?
OTOH, maybe I was thinking about Sony/Columbia/Tristar...but I could have
sworn Sony was involved with Time/Warner...
And we all know that Viacom (still sounds like a Transformers character)
owns Paramount.
Like I said, I get a headache trying to keep all these mergers and buyouts
straight.. <G>
*heh* 6 degrees of corporate ownership....

Yup, 1993.
Turner purchased Hanna-Barbera, which was owned by Spelling

So Turner is only tangentially connected with Worldvision. I see.

Nope. It's only Columbia/Tristar. Turner's got his hands on Time Warner
now.

Macek still owns the rights, and will probably sit on it for a while.

Because, if I remember corectly, the show most likely only exists as the
two-episode versions now on tape. You're talking re-editing, plus restoring
the prints.
Still, you COULD air it as a hour show instead of 1/2 hour... if only
Voyager had any brains ^_^

He's not "sitting" on them. Right now, Sci-Fi Channel Europe is airing
Robotech. Sci-Fi US was airing it a while back... and may do so again
in the future.

In general, the Cartoon Network sucks. They really must get more
decent cartoons / anime (preferably the latter) on airtime. I'm of the
opinion that they chuck all the pathetic old HB down the drain (just
keep the good ones ;)
I find it bordering on hilarious that they fished out Ninja Robots (or
whatever it originally is called) and dubbed it for release just now.
Heheh, that thing is over 10 years old. The Sneezing Magician is an
even bigger fiasco.
Anyway, they should get more anime onto the CN.
Oh, and if you find out what their e-mail is, tell me. I support the
Force Five movement.

It should be on the turner website somewhere, ne?

[]Nope. It's only Columbia/Tristar. Turner's got his hands on Time Warner
[]now.
Phraseological nit: "Turner's got his hands IN Time Warner now". Most of
the Turner properties like CNN and H-B fall beneath the Time-Warner
banner, with Ted becoming No. 2 exec. or something.
(That's supposed to be news? I *always* considered Ted to be "No. 2")
