I dunno what to think about this. I don't like Spongebob, but I -really- like
Invader Zim, and it looks like Jhonen's job is on the line right now..

From J. Beck's site:

"Nickelodeon is laying off its SPONGEBOB SQUAREPANTS crew after 60 hit episodes
(crap like CATDOG have had more episodes produced) and there are rumors that
Nick's development staff is being paired down (or let go altogether). Klasky
Csupo and Nelvana will likely pick up the slack."

I think it's an unwritten rule for us to dislike Nicktoons, but can you imagine
a Nicktoon block that is completely done by Klasky-Csupo? Which is the lesser
evil?

the lesser evil for Nick is to have foreign cartoons like they once aired in
the 1980's (Danger Mouse from Cosgrove-Hall, Mysterious Cities of Gold from
NHK, Fireball XL-5 from ITC/Carlton ironically Fireball XL-5 is aired on
Nickelodeon Australia)

Well, Danger Mouse is kind of in a bad place right now. The DVD just got
cancelled because of 9/11, so it's one show that networks won't be touching for
a while.

What about The Tomorrow People? I used to think that was so cool back when I
was too young to see through overforced acting..

Ah, but it is now the 00s (the aughts?) and there is a lot more
competition for acquiring the good Japanese cartoons and for airing them,
since so many other channels are doing the same thing.

Given that, a Klasky-Csupo block would be their path of least resistance.
Not that I'd want to see such a thing! Ack.

OK...they probably have 5 more Spongebob Spumco-copier ;-) episodes in the
can, and anyone who knows anything about MTV Networks knows that when it
comes to successful animated series they tend to stop at 65 episodes,
Beavis and Butt-Head notwithstanding. Witness the end of "Daria" which
ended at 65 episodes, and the end of the first wave of "Rugrats" episodes.
65 is the "magic number" for syndication. After a series hits 65, MTV
Networks usually pulls the plug because they're too cheap to fund any
more. "Rugrats" became a legitimate phenom so they dragged the show back
into production, without their best writers and with a stupid Child
Psychologist on the story editing team to make sure the show was turned
into complete drivel.

MTV Networks uses Klasky-Csupo to "pick up the slack" because Viacom owns
controlling interest in the studio. I dunno if the Viacom
International/CBS/MTV Networks octopus has similar hooks into Nelvana...if
memory serves maybe there was some deal between Nelvana and CBS before CBS
got bought by Viacom.

Take care,

Why do I get the feeling that even if there was a nuclear war, the only
things to survive would be cockroaches and "Crappy/Stupid Prod."?

Nick would'nt know talent if it ran up and bit them on the ass,

MTV actualy wanted more episodes of Daria, but the order came too late
in the 5th season for the animators add episodes to that season .
Instead the creator decided to do a tv movie to wrap things up and have
Daria graduate.

Where did you get that information? I always thought that Klasky-Csupo was independently-owned.

If you're talking about who owns Nelvana, I don't think Viacom owns them, but another media conglomerate does -- Corus
Entertainment, which owns several specialty channels in Canada, including YTV. In turn, Corus is controlled by Shaw
Communications, which is the largest cable company in western Canada, and also owns the Star Choice and Cancom satellite
services.

Huh? I dont see anything possibly offensive about Danger Mouse,,no terrorist
acts or anything. If anything,,the G.I. Joe DVDs are the ones that probably
wont be reaching stores for a while.

Viacom bought their stake in Klasky-Csupo around the time when the first
Rugrats movie was announced, if memory serves me right.

Speaking of foreign cartoons, what cartoons would've been staples of the
US Nickelodeon if they ever picked them up?

For some reason, I wish Akira Toriyama's Dr. Slump was shown on the
network, but it's toilet humor (including talking turds) would never pan
well with most people back in the '80s).

I like Dr.Slump too, if Nickelodeon don't show this toilet humor maybe
Comedy Central could show it, after if they show toilet humor like South
Park why not Dr.Slump?

the irony is one of shows not produced by Nickelodeon but aired on Nick who
started the bathroom humor or toilet humor: You Can't Do that on Television

Seems like Dr. Slump hardly made any waves whatsoever here in North
America as it has over in Europe. I know Harmony Gold once had the
rights to this and Dragon Ball and they had tired to sell the series
through producing several English dubbed pilots as well (I have one on
video myself). Harmony Gold also supposibly had the rights to Minky
Momo, this could've been another good show they could've had on Nick too
(though they'd probably have to call it "Gigi" as it was called in
French and Italy).

Thanks for the note. This was a show that was one of my favorites on
Nick in the '80s, though I never thought about the kind of humor they
were going after at the time, such as the obvious Barf's Burgers jokes I
used to laugh at.

Nick used to show a good amount of foreign programming for much of their
share in the '80s, when the cable industry was still young and the
market for any original programming was still small to nilch.

I used to watch Les Mysterieues Cites d'Or a lot, along with
Dangermouse, Belle & Sebastian, Spartikus and the Sun Beneath the Sea,
and others. Nick never got around to several others that were popular
in Europe at the time, like Ulysse 31, Around the World with Willy Fog,
perhaps Doraemon and others I can't think of right now.

Hopefully this sort of trend might come back to the network later if
they feel the need to scrimp their cash and buy into the foreign market
more.

Unfortunately the DVD was to be called "Danger Mouse and the Tower of

Yes, but there are already some individual Transformers DVDs out, but no
GI Joes. I think that the TFs are faring a little better in the current
80s revival than the Joes. The current TF toys are a lot better than the
terrible rehashed GI Joe 3 3/4 inch figures...

For what it's worth, there's a blind news item on
http://www.toonzone.net (the fan Time Warner animation site).
According to an unnamed animator, the show's creator only licensed the
show for four years. He was asked to continue the show, but he decided
to move on to other projects.

Seems kinda crazy to leave one of the few solid successes in animation
(which are rare) to try to do something else, but that's show biz...

As you seem to have info on Harmony Gold, do you know if they ever
produced a dubbed pilot for the series Aura Battle Dunbine? (think
that's the name) The old anime magazine Aninonomous mentions a pilot,
but I've never found proof and get laughed at whenever I bring it up in
the anime group :) ADV now has the rights to the series.

Ouch, unfortunate bad timing. To be honest though, like most things I doubt
the people actually buying it would have taken much notice, only the people

Seems like it. I thought the cover kicked ass myself. Just wish
someone would convince Pearson to release a R1 DVD of the DM series here
in the US, or at least find a network that would be willing to re-air
