Mom wanted to see Ponyo, because it was from an 8-year-old girl's
point of view. It got good reviews, too.
Ponyo's obviously not easily attained a video stores right now, so I
offer her one of my many Spirited Away DVDs.
Mom, after Chihiro's parents transform into pigs:
"This is good. I didn't know you had this movie."
Mom, after watching the movie:
"Well, I thoroughly enjoyed that."
Mom, after I explain the raves the film received when it was released
in North American theaters:
"So this is an anime?"
What next"? Kiki. Totoro. Dare I say, Cardcaptor Sakura? Sailor
Moon? The possiblitities are endless. But, as animation fans already
know, anything is possible with this art form :-)
Terrence Briggs, not expecting many surprises, aside from Mo'nique
crushing her film's critics.
Peace to you...
May I put in two bits for Whisper of the Heart? No fantasy elements,
but one of the better Ghibli movies, in my humble opinion.
Happy viewing...

Elfen Lied, Berserk, Gantz. She's ready for it.

Although "Whisper of the Heart" certainly is good I'd rather suggest
"Only Yesterday", "Howl's Moving Castle" and "Porco Rosso".

I haven't seen those myself :)

Gee, how about Bastard, or Eiken?
But seriously, why not try turning her on to Bebop or FMA or one of
the other really good series out there? After all, if she's your
mother then she is a grown up.

Those neither :)

I'd try Bebop before FMA. Or Planetes.

For movies I'd recommend Tokyo Godfathers and Millennium Actress by Kon
Satoshi.
For series leave a stack out for her to sample early episodes of,
perhaps limit it to 13-26 episodes series rather than longer for now.
