question for any colorblind animators...
Aaron Mojo Hazouri or Bizarro No 1
art school after throwing years away in business and assorted other "useful"
majors. I want to be an animator (I'd really like to work in character design
but I wanna get my foot in a door somewhere). I'm not asking how I get started
or anything because I've read things and spoken to people and I know there's no
real easy way to do it. My question is how much difficulty will being severely
colorblind cause me?? I've found it easy to ignore for the most part til
lately, getting involved in more intricate and complicated design projects; I
understand color theory but frankly everything looks green (purples, reds,
yellows, browns, greys)... ANybody have experiences to share??

golly, you may have a hard time with animation but would sure be a godsend
in politics!
Sorry, that is a flip answer & your question if legitimate deserves better
but only thing I can think of is to work with two color line drawings or
strict RGB palettes and/or get someone else to check the actual output. The
first is certainly a legitimate form, many of the really great 'underground'
comics of the 60s/70s never did use any color. surely design per se does not
depend on it?

No but nevertheless, computer work is difficult without someone checking
everything for me. Hand stuff is easier as long as everything is labelled
(intellectually I know enough about color theory to know what I ought to be
mixing, even if it LOOKS green). Really I'm curious as to whether or not any
pros have had to deal with this.

I take your point, extremely difficult to work creative fugue with someone
hanging over your shoulder. I am just amateur animator for fun, let us hope
some pro's chime in as could probably offer more relevant practical advice.
Have you tried comp.graphics. animation?
re high school art teacher tho, i DO have long time experience with
nay-saying nerds like that, hope you realize proper response is to make
success in chosen field, make them eat their words? ideally become rich &
famous but just plain old job is good beginning!

My father is a fairly successful local illustrator, also doing murals and
tapestries and things on occasion, and once or twice he did my homework for me
and got a C minus. Just out of curiosity -- wondering what the teacher was
looking for, exactly -- he had a parent-teacher conference with the woman and
confirmed that she was a total dingbat...
But when I'm a wildly successful cartoonist, maybe she'll recognize herself
being blown up on Fox Kids or something.

are she Wont recognize herself, minor godlingesses of that type are
notoriously short on self awareness; but go ahead & do it anyway, the rest

the notoriety plus steady paycheck is not to be laughed at....

Heheh. One of my ex-teachers whose name I'll even use - Dave Kyle - ejected
me from Grade 10 'Honours' English because I was also in his P.E. class, and
we didn't get along there (long story). His 'official' reason (presented to
the parents, no less) was that I was incapable "of keeping up with the
class" and should be downgraded to the regular stream program forthwith.
Honestly, it was the best thing that ever happened to me,
scholastically-speaking, as I wound up in a class with an English teacher
who not only knew his literature, but was ex-OSS from the War, used to play
tennis with Clint Eastwood, and seemed to possess a genuine love of teaching
which he never failed to share with the class. Mr. Bender (this teacher),
"died in office" the semester following, unfortunately, and Mr. Kyle left
the same semester with little fanfare to what I later heard was a project to
write the memoirs of B.C. serial killer Clifford Robert Olson! Ol' Cliffy
couldn't've picked a better scribe. I bet they got along famously.
Will Dave ever show up in a cartoon? Oh, I think you can bet on it, in one
form or another (probably quadrapedal), but the "any similarities
between...<blah, blah>" caveat at the end should keep him guessing enough to
be satisfiedly vexed.

Classical animation requires a pencil - that's it.

I've known some successful animators who are colour blind - heck, one was even
"legally" blind.

Chances are good ol' Gretchen Ebersol would be too addle-brained to notice
herself underneath an anvil on Kids WB one afternoon by the time it comes to
pass. Heck, she's too addle-brained NOW to recognize it.
At least drawing gives us the ability to vent frustrations which otherwise
remain bottled til some hapless portfolio reviewer says some offhand comment
that sets us off.

(Speaking of being infuriated, here I was with this nice drawing of Bugs Bunny
for a 3 year old cousin, beautifully inked, colored nicely -- I thought -- with
watercolor marker when my sister drops by and says "Why is Bugs Bunny green?")

Suggest you keep on with animation, supplement with fast catch up course in
SPIN; very lucrative field these days, see newspapers, TV, etc.

be true, and them guys is _definitely_ GREEN.
Maybe some little tiny sungoggles with green lenses? (tie on with string;
earpieces dangerous for little folk)
Then Bugs And The Guys will look just right, while the kid will probably get
off on the glamor aspects so it wont be mean at all, just furthering
education
(we girls pick up on function of adornments very early; though of course at
3 she is unlikely to need artificial enhancement to charm)
.(dont let her wear them all the time, though; at 3 also does not need to
have vision clouded, even if prone to give out in child-like way horrid
truths of essential greenness fully acculturated hypocritical adult would
tactfully slur over.)

jeez, maybe better try that english course myself, i get more long-winded as
the night wears on. mom alwyas said that meant i was sleepy. but what does
