Arrrrgh. I just saw Looney Tunes on ABC -- I knew they were cutting certain
scenes from the show, but what I saw this morning was just plain sad! :P
Let's see -- they cut a gunshot (grandma shooting Sam in the face -- they
showed him with his clothes tattered, but with explanation given), they cut
Slyvester Sam cussing out grandma (I guess it's wrong to say
"RackemfalcksmOOOOOOOOOH!!"), and Bugs Bunny hitting Slyvester over the head
with a mallet. ("Would you like one lump or two?" "Two!" <cut to next scene>)

Huh? Why the hell does ABC even _AIR_ the show? I'd rather just remember
Looney Toons for what it used to be than to see it systematically raped in
this fashion. All this instituted by Disney, the pioneer of modern western
animation. <sigh>

To be fair to Disney, I think these cuts were already in place before Disney took
over ABC. ABC has been airing the Bugs and Tweety show for years now with these
kinds of cuts. It is terrible and does take a lot of the point out of the airing
of these cartoons.Unfortunately -everyone- airs chopped LT these days, even
Cartoon Network. Looks like the Golden Age of Looney Tunes LD sets are the only
place you can find these cartoons uncensored:P

Dear Ryan, deep in your heart you know why. When we were kids nobody
worried about violence it was assumed that even as kids we were smart
enough "not to try this at home" now children are not expected to realized
this, thus the watering down of some of your favorties.
By all means collect your favorties on video (as we have) and watch
them, but don't expect the networks not to edit to the youngest common
demoninator.

The strangest thing about the censorship is the inconsistancy. Seems sometimes
it's OK to hit someone on the head and sometimes it isn't. Same goes for guns
and most anything that goes BOOM!

I'm one of the lucky ones. I grew up watching uncut Looney Tunes and they
didn't affect me in the least.

When I saw "One Froggy Evening" on CBS Staurday AM they cut it in this
manner:
1) Originally the man puts out a sign saying "Free Admission" and no
one comes in. He replaces that with a sign saying "Free Beer" and is
stampeded.
2) In the televised version the man puts out a sign saying "Free
Admission" and is stampeded, thus eliminating the entire gag!!!
It's amazing what they'll cut so parents will feel okay letting their
kids watch unsupervised.
On the other hand there are folks who'll let their kids watch ANYTHING
supervised or not. I was in a video store while a family was shopping,
and their youngest daughter (I guess she was probably 4 or 5) picked
up a box and described IN GRAPHIC DETAIL that movie, which she'd
obviously seen before. The movie was Russ Meyer's "Beyond the Valley
of the Dolls".

The last time I watched Looney Toons on ABC they played a Ralph Wolf/Sam
Sheepdog cartoon - this great gag had Sam about to drop Ralph off a
cliff...the noon whistle blows, Sam places Ralph back on the ground,
they walk off to lunch together, share a thermos of coffee, have a
smoke, return to their spot in bland contentment...the whistle blows
again, Sam drops Ralph off the cliff.

At least that's how it did go once...they cut this scene into
incoherence BECAUSE OF THE SMOKING!!! Bunch'a yellowbellies.

That was a long time ago, and I remember that edit. Ludicrous. It's like
when Channel 11 would edit references to "free hamburgers" out of Popeye
cartoons.

hmmmmm the "Free Beer" edit I could understand (though, not agree
with), but editing out "Free Hamburgers"? Makes me wonder if a good
deal of the editing is also done to squeeze in more commercial time,
as opposed to protecting the kiddies from supposedly violent content.

I understand there's a movement underway in the Texas state legislature to
enact a statute making it *illegal* to edit any favorable references to
hamburgers in Popeye cartoons.

<sigh> For years now the network brass had this obsessive need to take those
classic WB cartoons and mangle them beyond recognition in order to render them
"politically correct" and free of "imitatable violence". Shame on them.

All resposible parties should be taken out and shot! Or better yet, dropped
off of a cliff with an anvil following them down!!!

<<I used to remember watching either the Toledo or Detriot area station
that played the Loony Tunes cartoons, having to edit like the first one
or two minutes out of the beginning of the cartoon (after the credits).
I used to felt upset that they did it. I guess it was their way to fit
four cartoons into a half hour time slot (three usually can fit into
that time slot uncut).>>

Geez, I remember that! They ran Jones' "Baby Buggy Bunny" and cut the
initial minute or so that showed Baby-Face Finster was an adult bank
robber, so what we saw was Bugs manhandling a baby! Yeesh.
