Hello Everyone.

I've got a 33G, powerheads, UGF, aquaclear 200, 6.5ph,
amon/nitra/nitri = 0, swordtails, 2 guppies, 2 pleco's, 1 catfish and 4
angelfish.

Last night, I saw 3 of 4 angel fish kissing or fighting. They
would look at each other and then grab each others mouth/lips and flap
their fins like crazy for about 15-20 seconds. 2 seems to have red marks
all over the lips. I presume that the lips were damage in some way (or
maybe it just turned red?? -- is there such thing as a red angelfish??
hmm).

Can anyone tell me what is wrong or what is happening? They weren't
doing this before....

Thanks

Please reply here or at bre...@freenet.vancouver.bc.ca (latter is preferred)

Ben,
Your fish are fighting over territory. Likely, it's two males trying to
establish their area of the tank. When it gets into lip-locking, that means
that it's getting pretty intense and it would probably prompt me to remove
the fish if they start getting too injured.

They are pairing off to breed. They lip-lock to determine each others
strengths. "It has been written" that this is a way they determine a
sutible mate.

I agree with the above. They are definately ready to pair off to breed.
Just keep watching and enjoying.

Let me put it like this. You should plan on taking care of a lot of baby
angelfishes soon. Angels are territorial when they are ready to begin
reproducing, and that's what I think is going on here.

Enjoy! Angels are excellent fish to breed, because they take great care
of their young!

Fighting - it is possible that a breeding pair is forming otherwise the
current pecking order is being challenged.

You should remove the guppies, and such asap. The anglefish become
devils when they lay eggs and will kill the rest of the fish.

The original poster won't have to wait until there's eggs. Angelfish
will happily eat guppies if they can get their lips around them (which is
easy as the angel fish approach adult size).

Most likely the angel fish are fighting. I have 3 oscars and i saw them
engaging in a fight by locking their lips together. This is very common
among cichlids. Its probably nothing to worry about, they are probably
fighting over territory.

Angels sometime look like they are fighting before mating...

Opinions expressed herein are my own and may not represent those of 3M.

I had a pair of successfully breeding Angelfish that would do this lip-lock
push thing before mating. It looked like a kind of playful push tug of war to
me. On the other hand, I have also seen my Angelfish fight (I have 14 of them)
and they will dart and jab at their victim. Sometimes they even lean a little
to one side and stab at the other fish. From what I have seen, this type of
fighting is serious and makes the lip-lock look playful.

THESE ARE THE LIKELY POSSIBILITIES:
(1) The fish are two males fighting for dominance.

(2) The fish are a male or female that could mate, but hate each other's
guts in the mean time.

This happened between one of my breeding pairs. It was hard watching them
fight inbetween breeding times, but they produced a lot of eggs so I had to
keep 'em together. If they weren't so darned productive, I would've
separated them in an instant. Lip locking MOSTLY occurs between two males
that are fighting for tank dominance.
