Subject: Physical Oceanographer Job - Monterey, California
Date: 22 May 92 23:55:56 GMT
Lines: 42
The Oceanography Department at the Naval Postgraduate School
in Monterey, CA is looking for a few good oceanographers. The
jobs available are in the GS-9/11 range. Recent graduates with
an M.S. degree or individuals with a B.S. degree in a fundamental
science (e.g. physics or applied math) and a couple of years
experience may apply.
The Oceanography Department focuses on numerical ocean circulation
modeling, satellite remote sensing, and using modern methods to sample
both nearby coastal waters and Arctic seas. Though the department
is primarily a physical oceanography department, close ties exist with
the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute and Moss Landing Marine
Labs which fill the void with biological, chemical, and geological
oceanographers. Our organizations commonly share ship time on the
locally based R/V Point Sur.
The Naval Postgraduate School grants M.S. and Ph.D. degrees; staff members
are encouraged to pursue degrees while working here. The need we have now
is for people with a strong backgrounds in mathematics who are willing to
work on state-of-the-art graphics workstations in helping us develop
scientific visualization tools for use in research and education. The
possibilities are exciting since the department is acquiring several
high-end graphics workstations. They will make the examination of our
large and complex data sets an easier and more enjoyable task.
If you think you would be interested in working as an oceanographer on
the Monterey Peninsula (an area that Rep. Leon Panetta is calling a
possible next "Woods Hole") then send your resume with 3 personal
references and a completed SF-171 form (available from any government
personnel office or college employment center) to:
