About 15 years ago I had a 55 gallon freshwater aquarium. I've spent
a lot of time "on the road" since then and an aquarium hasn't been
feasible. Now that I'm more permanent, I'd like to get started again.
Well, times have changed. Seems like the technology is a whole lot
better. So now I am thinking about a marine aquarium.
I'm thinking about a 90 gallon aquarium. I'm probably going to start
out with fish-only but may graduate to inverts later. I've been
reading the FAQs and talking to local stores. Looks like I'm going to
need a trickle filter and a protein skimmer.
Do I need some kind of power filter or cannister filter also?
Somebody at a store today told me that a UV sterilizer was a "must".
All I could get out of him was that it killed bacteria in the water.
Could someone explain this thing to me and why I would want one?
Can anybody recommend a good mail order house for a tank and stand
this size? What about marine animals? Do people have much success
with mail order fish and such? How about a recommendation on what I
should buy locally and what I should buy mail order?
I'd buy everything local just to establish a good relationship with a
shop, but in my area, there seems to be few shops that carry marine
animals. The ones that do seem to vary wildly on advice. One guy
clearly knew what he was doing (no obvious conflict with the FAQs or
other things I've read) but he is a college student and will be moving
on at the end of the semester. I fear he will be replaced with some
of the others that I have spoken to.
Any and all comments greatly appreciated!

Add a couple of powerheads in addition to your trickle filter and protein
skimmer. Marine fish love good water movement. A UV sterilizer is not
absolutely necessary. The dealer who told you so was just trying to make
a fast buck. One of my favorite marine fish is the yellow long nose butterfly.
It has got to be one of the hardiest fish in all of fishdom, and will eat
ANYTHING you throw into the tank. Here's the secret to being successful at
keeping marines: WATER CHANGES. A twenty percent water change every two
weeks will guarantee success.
Good Luck,
Mark
I have used Animal House (in Leeds) several times - they are cheap and
quick. There are also several others that advertise (in PFK) which I
intend to try shortly (e.g. Reef Aquatics).
Mail order is OK as long as you know more or less what you need.....
