Does anyone know who is the CHEAPEST out there?
There are several companies that are very competive and you'll find
very little difference between them. That Fish Place has good prices
and good, fast service. Pet Warehouse can match That Fish Place
in price (I'm not worrying about a few pennies here) *on their
advertised items* and I've found their service to be as good as That
Fish Place, with one major exception. Pet Warehouse's catalog prices
are considerable higher than their advertised specials (this is not
true with That Fish Place) and they will not automatically give you
their best price; you've got to tell them you're ordering from one of
their ads. (Or that's the way it used to be ... I haven't ordered from
them in 8 months or so).
I have also found Mail Order Pet Shop quite good as far as prices and
service. But they have a little marketing ploy called "Free Shipping".
They don't charge extra for shipping but they have a flat "processing
fee" that is linked to the total amount of your order, which may or
may not be cheaper than if you actually paid for the shipping.
I used The Aquarium Mail Order company in Orlando once simply because
they had the cheapest price on a large trickle filter. Had no problems
with them either.
I've used all four, and I'm sure there are other companies I don't use
that are probably just as good. They all have catalogs. Pick up the
Tropical Fish Hobbyist's Guide to Mail Order Companies (otherwise
known as `Freshwater and Marine Aquarium') for a more complete list.

Thank you for the info.!
Always, try to do business with local stores, if they are
well run and in the same price ballpark as mail order.
> IMHO, TFP is the best.........
Thanks for the info.
I use That Fish Place or Pet Warehouse and both are fast and courteous, but
have had too many problems and not longer will use M.O.P.S.
Hope this helps.

: Hope this helps.
I have used MOPS many times and have had no problems. When they shipped me
the wrong item once, they even shipped a replacement free without asking
me to return the first one.
Also, I have gotten them to match lower prices on many different items from
various mail order houses

You're right. I've gone through 12 different public suppliers and 'That
fish place' is the winner by a landslide

I've done all of my mail-ordering.

I don't agree. They have higher prices than TFP, and when you call them,
they never quote their best price--always their worst price. I found it
frustrating having to tell them where I saw every price in FAMA (in their
ad) and if I couldn't remember their exact FAMA price (if I did not have
it in front of me, they lied a higher price.

I DO agree...MOPS has lower or equal prices on almost every item (standard
catalog anyway) but more to the point, they can't lie and give you the worst
price because the prices given in FAMA are ALWAYS identical to their
catalog prices...they explicitly state this in every ad and catalog and
I have found it to be true in every instance I've checked. Perhaps you
were thinking of another company...say TFP who routinely quote prices higher
than whatever the latest FAMA says???

PS In California MOPS orders are delivered on average 5 working days faster
than TFP orders (n = 4 for both companies).
Here is some raw data for you to analyze yourself. I was putting an
order together yesterday and decided to compare prices so I could post
to the net. I list weights when shipping depends on it. A description
of the shipping policies is at the end. All costs come from the
current 1994-95 catalogs.
ITEM MOPS TFP PW
Ebo-Jager 150W Heater 14.39 16.99 (0.8#) 16.79
Reef Crystals 50 gal 17.79 16.99 (14.5#) 14.98 (16#)
CoralLife PO4 Remover 30 oz 16.89 26.99 (2.15#) 24.59
Hagen 802 Powerhead 22.69 29.99 (2.25#) 26.98
Subtotal 71.76 90.96 (19.7#) 68.36 no salt
S&H (UPS zone 5) 5.99 8.39 6.75 no salt
Additional S&H 0.75 handling 6.01 salt S&H
14.98 salt
GRAND TOTAL 77.75 100.10 96.10
Explanation of shipping:
MOPS: straight fee based on cost of total order. Weight not important.
TFP: 0.75 handling charge for each order plus UPS actual freight.
PW: straight fee based on cost of order except on selected items which
are designated in the catalog and carry their own shipping cost. Salt
is one of these so we do not include the salt price in the subtotal,
figure the shipping subtotal based on the item subtotal, add in the
special items and the UPS shipping charge for these special items and
then total the whole thing. Unpleasant to do IMO.

I like MOPS too. They are the cheapest I can find, and they are
willing to match others' prices. I just got a Coralife pH tester
from them for $42.99( TFP's current sell price), which they listed
as $47.99 in their catalog.
In Texas, though, you usually need to wait for about 10 days to 2 weeks.
