I have three questions relating to this:-
1: Will this temperature kill?
2: If yes to the above what can be done to lower the temperature? I
have tried water changes of about 50% with colder water but this does not
last long. I have also turned the overhead light off as this was creating
a lot of heat when it was on (its a fluorescent).
3: I have a powerhead pump that is submerged. Should I change this to an
external pump in hot weather. Will this make any difference.
Thanks in advance for any answers

I personally doubt that heat alone would have killed your fish,
unless it was *extreme* heat (you didn't specify, tsk, tsk ;-).
I keep 10 inch Pl*cos with my 12 inch pirhana. The pirhana
favors warmer water so I keep the tank between 83F and 87F.
I three years I only had one death. That occurred when my
only air pump went out. I tend to think the poor fella
suffocated. There was much sadness, Big Al had been with
us for more than 2 years. <:-(
Anyways, Spotty is perfectly happy is what most people would
consider a bath-water-warm-aquarium. He swims, he eats algae
and zuccinni, he chews his driftwood, and sometimes he hides
from the pirhana. ;-)
