I have an older Hagen canopy with a 24" fluorescent lamp. This model
requires that I hold down the button for the lights to come on. I
would like to put it on a timer, but as it has no ballast, this is not
possible. A new canopy costs $75+. I was curious as to whether it is
possible to rewire the current lighting to incorporate a ballast. Does
anyone have any experience doing this?

Thanks

Look into screw-based compact fluorecent bulbs. 20W (1150 lumens),
65k bulb (MFG: Lights of America) is <$5 from Wally World. You can
get a replacement vanity/wall sconce light base that will accomodate
two bulbs for under $3. So you can have 40W for under $15 - $0.40/W
beats the pants off of any other light source I've seen. They fit in
tight spaces, too. Coralife also puts out some ColorMax compact
fluorecents that are $10 for 20W and come in grow light, actinic blue,
and full spectrum varieties.
