Hi all,
My brother's son (a 5 year old) was visiting a neighbor friend whose
parents have a
30-gallon fish tank. Reese (the 5 yo) thought it would be cool to drink
the fish tank
water. So they dipped their hands into the tank and took a few sips.
YECHHH
I have no idea what the fish were, but it was a freshwater aquarium. My
brother says
that the fish seem healthy and the water was clear. Should he be
concerned?
Should he take Reese to the pediatrician and get him checked for worms
or something?
Any help/information/advice that you can offer we really appreciate!

Don't worry about it. I wouldn't encourage drinking aquarium water as a
general practice, but most of us fishkeepers get a mouthful from time to
time when we're setting up siphons and I haven't suffered any ill
effects. You have to imagine any pathogens that will thrive in
freshwater are going to find the human stomach a rather inhospitable
place.

It's not terribly different water than what you'd find at a swimming
hole at some creek. Boys have been swallowing that for years, and
they've seemed to survive just fine.

Thank you Greg, I'll calm down now, and let my brother know. ;-)
I guess that makes sense. Kids eat dirt sometimes, too, I guess and
they survive, right? Thanks, again.

The only thing I would be worried about would be, is there any
medication or other things that were put into the tank recently that
state on the lable not for human consumption?

Not trying to scare anybody but wanted to bring this point up to ensure
the kid will be okay.

In many if not most parts of the country, your tap water has fish swimming in
it. He'll survive.

I know that I've swallowed my share of water (and worse!) while trying to
start siphons. Old age has seemed to take a few (alright - stop that
laughing !) brain cells but I don't think I'm any worse for the water.

find out if there were any chemical additives in it. other than that, I've
had a few accidents with siphoning (i'm aware that I'm older) and no
problem. Other than that, I feel there aint any problem. Ask a doctor or
something like that if you want to be sure.

LOL I have had my fair share of tank water too. ptuey!!!

I use ro water though so the poisons and contaminants have been removed so my
tank water may be cleaner than the tap water.
