I had a 55 gallon reef tank a few years ago but ended up selling
everything because I had no time for it anymore. Now I just want to
start a 10 gallon marine fish only tank, in my living room, just to have
something lively to look at. I don't want to use a wet/dry and protein
skimmer like on my old tank. I was wondering what I should use for
filtration that is low maintenance and low cost, perhaps under $100.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Don

My friend a wet/dry with protien skimmer is low maintenance.I haven't
used 1, but from all the hipe I would say get a cpr backpak. All other
filters are high maintenance. When I use to keep a 10 fish only I used a
hang on power filter
that needed to be cleaned every week with water changes every 2 weeks.
And
at that I had piles of algae problems and quite a few casualtys.

Don, check out a 2.5 gal (!) reef tank at Project Pico
Reef, http://www.avalon.net/~athame/pico.html. You may be able to
e-mial with this guy and his contacts for some primo small-tank advice.
It might not be cheap, but it may be the absolute best for a small
tank.
Good luck,
John

Hi Don,
The filter I prefer is the CPR BakPak. I know you ask for a filter
under $100, but it isn't that far off. It is a protein skimmer with a
wet/dry section. Despite your desire not to use one of these, I still
think it would be your best bet.
I know this might not be the answer you are looking for, but I thought
this might help a little anyways.
If you have any questions, feel free to email me.
