I have done a lot of reading and research about tropical fish and, although
I know that it is more difficult than a freshwater one, I would very much
like to try setting up a marine aquarium.
As space at home is limited, I could not accommodate an aquarium bigger
than about 90cmx30cmx38cm. I would welcome comments about whether this
would be adequate to start - and whether anyone knows where one might be
purchased relatively cheaply (in the UK)! I suppose that it would be
inadvisable to try to find a second-hand tank? I am thinking about
starting with small damsels: are there any other kinds which I could start
with in this size tank?
I live in the East Midlands/East Anglia - about 120 miles north of London.
I have discovered two interesting shops with a wide range of stock and
equipment - Waterzoo in Peterborough and World of Water in Woodborough,
near Nottingham. My father is willing to travel a reasonable distance:
are there any other places worth visiting?
Thank you in anticipation for any help.

A tank with those dimensions is approximately 98 liters (26 US gallons) and a
fine size for starting a saltwater marine aquarium. Damsels are a great fish
to start with. They are very hardy (avoid the chromis). I especially like the
yellow-tail blue damsel and the humbug (black and white stripes). The humbugs
do not keep their bold colors into adult hood though.
Use about 3 damsels to start your tank, then after your tank is established
look into adding another fish or two. Use the time it takes for you tank to
cycle to research other fishes you might like to add. Because of the size, you
may want to avoid fish which grow more than 5-7 cm or are very aggressive.
Sorry I can't help on places to buy, I live in Tampa, FL USA. Please visit my
web site Couch Cousteau: http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Valley/1624. I'm
also a beginner to the hobby (2.5 months) and have six damsels (three different
varieties) in our marine tank.
Good luck,
Ralph
