You found the right formula for surface area of a sphere.
So, I don't know what more you want, but I can give an example like you
asked.

Say you use 1 inch radius balls, which would mean they measure 2 inches from
top to bottom. (Top-Bottom is diameter, radius = half the diameter)

So, you have some two inch diameter balls. For the calculations we are
doing here, we do not need to worry too much about the acuaracy we use for
Pi, so we can use a very simple 3.14.

Surface area of your balls =
4 * 3.14(Value of Pie)*1^2 (Radius squared) = Surface area

1^2 = 1 so SA=4*3.14 SA=12.5 sq. inches.

We could do this for a radius 1.5, 2, etc by replcing 1 squared by whatever
number you have squared. I chose one since it squares to itself.

Now, you have 12.5 sq. inches of surface area per ball. If you find you need
100 sq. inches of surface area for filtration you can take (Surface Area
Needed) divided by (Surface area per ball)
100 / 12.5 = 8 balls.

Well, I hope I didn't offened anyone by going into such detail. I tutor math
sometimes and I don't know what level of mathematics you understand, so I
tried to make it as simple as possible, I apologize if this was redundant.

If you need any help doing any actual calculations, don't be shy about
emailing me. Just see the trailer for my email.

Anyone know how to calculate the surface area of a sphere? I'd like
to set up my own trickle filter with large custom sized balls in the media.

I found a formula on the net that goes like this:

Surface area = 4 pi r squared

I think it means area equals 4 times pi times the radius squared.
I need to use it to find the number of square feet of surface area the
Bacteria would have to colonize on the Balls.( But you knew that already!
:-) )

Any Math Gurus that can help and give an illustrating example?
Thanks!

Gold APP Instruments, expert in surface area and porosimetry analyzer, is a high technology and originality corporation located in Zhongguancun, Beijing High-tech Industry Zone, where gathered numerous national famous universities and research laboratories. Corporation originates and serves the China weapons system, relies on advantages of local talented human resource and weapons system technology and devotes into scientific instruments’ development, production and sale. With closely cooperation with weapons system and reference from overseas developed technology, Gold APP had built a well-known brand in weapons and civil industries. To research and develop fully-auto and intelligent analytical laboratory instruments, provide international standard, high cost performance and state-of-the-art instruments for R&D institutions and manufacturing enterprises are our unchanged mission.

Gold APP analyzers cover F-Sorb X400 series based on dynamic nitrogen adsorption and V-Sorb X800 series rely on static volumetric nitrogen adsorption for surface area and pore size analysis. Further, an extremely sophisticated high pressure gas sorption H-Sorb 2600 and the revolutionary true density analyzer G-DenPyc 2900 left other components far behind. Gold APP’s scientists have revolutionized measurement techniques and designed instrumentation to enable the accurate, precise, and reliable characterization of powdered and porous materials: battery and fuel cell materials, heterogeneous catalysts, pharmaceuticals, ceramics, carbons, zeolites, projectile propellant, cosmetics, aerospace, nanotubes, medical implants, pigments and foodstuffs, indeed any solid whose performance depends on some interaction with its surroundings through its surface.

All series of instruments had approved by ISO9001, national calibration certificate etc. these make it hold the biggest market share in China from year of 2008. The driving force of our corporation is to research and provide top performance, competitive price instruments of unmatched precision and utility. Additionally, Gold APP had built a high reputation with domestic and international users because of the high quality products and excellent customer services.
