Can someone please tell me exactly how much salt (Instant Ocean) to put
in a bucket to make 10 gallons of saltwater with a salinity level of
either 1.022 or 1.023 (but preferably 1.022). It takes me about 40
unenjoyable minutes just to make around 20 gallons of saltwater with a
salinity level of 1.022 because after 2 years of keeping saltwater fish,
I still haven't learned how much salt to put in. I have a gallon pitcher
and a 17 gallon bucket, so I can measure some other gallonage if you've
only calibrated a similar one. Thanks.

For every one gram of salt (Instant Ocean, etc) per litre you will raise
the salinity 1 ppt. Your specific gravity will vary slightly depending on
temperature. I"ll try and find the reference for the nomograph used here
at the lab.

1 cup of Instant Ocean to 2 Gal of water. I believe the container says the
same thing.

A 44 oz. soft drink cup works perfect. One cup full of salt will make 10
gal. of water.

Chris,

I too use a 17 gallon bucket (a red one! :) when mixing salt for a big
water change. I find 130 grams of salt is good for 1 gallon of water, so
I weigh out 2.2 kg of salt and dump it into the bucket (full of RO
water) and let it mix overnight. It's usually about right but sometimes
I have to make a minor adjustment the next day if I've been careless
about the water level.

HTH,

Tim

Hey Chris,

You sure are doing it the hard way. Don't measure the water, just measure
the salinity.
I assume you asked how to add salt to 10 gallons of water because you have a
10 gallon aquarium.
Put your rocks or whatever in your aquarium and then fill it to whatever
point you want it.
Add a moderate amount of Instant Ocean, let your filter dissolve the salt,
and then measure the salinity.
Keep doing this until you reach the salinity you want.
