Hi All:

I may be inheriting two rather large Angel fish. They are not doing very well. It looks to me as though they have some sort of fungus on the mouth. Kind of looks like cotton puffs. So I may need to quickly get a 10 gallon hospital tank up and running.

What is the best way to go about setting the quarantine tank up and getting it cycled as quickly as humanly possible? Time is of the essence. Also any recommendations on which medicine is the best for fungus type issues.

My sister-in-law currently has the fish and she claims she has "tried everything" to save the two fish and she is ready to destroy them. Of course she continues to  empty the tank, completely change the water and all filter media. So I guess you know where I'm going with this one. If I can get a tank up and running in a week to 10 days, I think I can save these guys from the eternal flush.

Any and all comments are greatly appreciated.

If you have another tank set up then just take some water from that and a
bit of filter media (or gravel if you use a UGF) from your own tank/filter
and pretty much instant cycled tank.

If your S-i-L has been changing all the filter media then she has no bio
filter to speak of & its not surprising the fish are a bit stressed out!
100% water changes will have been a tad stresfull as well....

Have a look at www.thekrib.net & see if you can identify the disease. Other
than that some standard anti-fungus/finrot treatment might work - or
possibly try some Melafix. Hard to know without seeing them. Sounds like
they are definitly salvageable - unless of course they have deteriorated too
badly.

Thanks I

I think they are salvageable and that's a great idea. I'll steal 10 gallons of water from my established tank and some filter media.

You can use your existing tank, do a 1/4 tank water change before using the medication, than  take out the carbon filter for the  days you treating the fish. It don't bother the healthy ones.
I buy the meds at Pets Mart or other fish stores, $3-$4, it works. It comes in the capsule. Cotton mouth disease or fin root is common with fish, easy to treat with medication, even if it's in advanced stage.
I had a Tetra 6-7 months ago,  it had both, cotton mouth and fin rot, other fishes were OK, when I came back from vacation, part of the bottom jaw and half of his fin was gone.
I put the  medication in my tank and in 4-5 days it was cured. Didn't bring his fin and jaw back, but it was healed, seems he was a happy customer, still able to feed and very active, like if nothing happened.
Just died a month ago, from some thing else, internal, he was blotted.
