Hi Everyone,
I know this has been said many times before, but today I installed my
96W bright kit on my 30 gallon plant tank. I can't believe the
difference....all of the plants are bubbling away like mad. An addition
like this really does prove the point about what happens when a system
is deficient in just one of the required areas. I have been trying to
grow plants for years, but never did any research about why they always
died until a month ago. At that point I decided to add CO2 since this
would be the easiest change for me since I already had a CO2 tank. The
addition of CO2 helped tremendously, (or so I thought at the time).
When I added my lighting today I couldn't believe the difference. The
entire surface of the tank is filled with O2 bubbles!!!!
Now I just gotta watch out for the pesky hair algae!!!
If I figure out a way to scan some photos, maybe I'll put a site up
showing my tank now, and then bi-weekly updates.

Steve Ferdelman & Lori Frew,

Prior to your installing the bright kit, did you get any bubbles from your
leaves with your co2 injection?
How difficult was your installation of the kit? Did you install it in a
standard hood or did you make a custom
light hood?. Many questions b/c I am thinking about to retrofit my full
twin 55W bulb hood with 2 55W bright kits
but I am not that handy. Never did any FL lighting work in my life and just
found out the function of a ballast in a
FL light fixture from reading this NG and at the Krib articles.

Have 2 Ultra daylight 55W tubes in my 55G with twin DIY co2 injection
bottles but my plants don't bubble.
Although, I do get a few bubbles at the top most part of the plant which is
closest to the light

Ummmm, you alreay have twin 55W compact fluorescent and want to replace
them with twin 55W compact fluorescent???? I'm confused.

Did you instead mean you currently have a twin 40W lamp fixture (2 x
40W straight T-12 size tubes) ?

I meant to say 40W twin. I should have proof read it b4 pushing the send
button. You got me there.!!
After reading my msg, I am confused too.

See above.

Patrick, we had a prior correspondence on this NG about the my light
situation..The light reflector part being the unknown variable. I am trying
to get a feedback from people who actually installed the AHS bright kits to
their standard twin light hood.
I am not a handy person who doesn't have much tools to begin with and who
takes a whole day just to change oil in my car.
Trying to build a custom hood like yours is just impossible in my
situation. I don't like to order things and never finish the project. I did
that too many times. I just want to make sure the kits are fittable in my
present hood without much alteration.
There gotta be someone who did it in a twin 40W hood. As per AHS, the
retrofit kit is not a straight bolt on job. Hence, I need to know how much
alteration I have to do.

Btw, I changed an 81 Saab 900 turbo clutch but took me whole 2 weeks to do
it. Read the instruction manual at least billion times for 1 1/2 weeks and
1/2 week to execute it. Well, the car was moving at first try.!

I have retrofitted my Perfecto Double Brite strip light (2 X 48" X 40watt FL bulbs) with the AH supply 2 X 55 Watt retro kit. It is not a "full hood" , but I would imagine that it is very similar to the space available in a double light hood. The retrofit was very easy, taking only about 1 1/2 hours, requiring only a drill, screwdriver and wirestrippers. You can call or e-mail Kim at AH and I'm sure he would be very willing to advise you before you purchase his kits. I talked with him several times and he is very knowledgeable about most conversions that can be done. The resulting light output is greater than the Perfecto SHO 48" 2X 55 watt strip light I purhased when they were first available, before there was an AH Supply, due to the excellent reflectors included with the kit. It also runs cooler due to the fact that the ballast in the retro is mounted on the outside (back) part of the OEM fixture.

My double light hood outside dimension is approximately the following: top*base*ht (3 1/2 * 4 1/2 * 4).
How's yours?

Sebin,
My strip light measures 4 1/2" wide at the base X 3 1/2 " wide at the top and 4" tall, so it appears that the dimensions are exactly the same. It should be a snap to install the retro kit in your hood! Is the strip light removable from the hood? I had a "full hood" once and the strip was just set in the top of the hood, not molded as one piece with the hood.

Well. Just for my input. I put my 96 watt bright Kit into a standard Single Bulb 36" Hood. It bends out the plastic a tiny bit, but its a lot brighter thanthe previous 20 watts. :)

Wow, same dimension !!! My full hood is actually 2 pcs. The base consists of 2 plastic hinged openings in front and 2 glass part glued to the base in the middle where the strip light part sits on top (moisture proof?).
Boy, I wish I have 1/2 of your confidence in snapping the retro kit..

30gal. freshwater planted tank measuring 36"L x 12-13"W x 16"H. The two 36w bulbs will fit nicely end-to-end under this one
reflector so the interior width of the light enclosure can be as little as 4 inches.
Tips on building a DIY enclosure for # 36551 / 2 / 7 36559

It doesn't take an expert carpenter or a fat wallet to build an attractive wood enclosure for your Bright Kit™. The drawings and
options discussed in these tips will help you avoid some mistakes and get your enclosure built fast. An added benefit is that the
enclosure you build can be better ventilated than most units you can buy. That not only increases bulb and ballast life, it also
increases the light output of your CF bulb. Click here to see a photo.
13 Watt 5000K Compact Fluorescent Bulb 11135
$6.49
This 7.5 inch twin-tube bulb has a near daylight color temperature of 5000 Kelvin and its rated life is 10,000 hours.
13 Watt 6400K Compact Fluorescent Bulb 11136
$4.99
This 7.3 inch twin-tube bulb has a light that appears slightly brighter and whiter than the bulb above. It has a color temperature
of 6400K and a rated life of 8,000 hours. Unbeatable price for a near-daylight 13w CF bulb.
13 Watt Blue Compact Fluorescent Bulb 11137
$7.99
This 7.3 inch twin-tube bulb allows the marine hobbyist to add actinic light to small tanks and create the appropriate marine look.
36 Watt 6200K Compact Fluorescent Bulb 11366
$26.99
The excellent under-water color rendering of this twin-tube German CF bulb actually seems to us to make a well planted aquarium seem
wider (front to back). At 16.4 inches long (including the socket) they are an especially good fit for 3 ft. or 1 meter tanks.
Color temperature is 6200K. 10,000 hours rated life.
36 Watt 5400K Compact Fluorescent Bulb 11365
$22.99

40 Watt 5000K Compact Fluorescent Bulb 11405
$15.99
From a dollars per watt perspective, this 22.5 inch long bulb is the hands down winner in long twin-tube CF lighting. And with a
20,000 hour rated life, it will continue to pay off for many years. According to the manufacturer's data, even after 8000 hrs. of
operation (about 22 months at 12hr./day) this bulb still puts out over 93% of its initial light. Color Temp. is 5000K. And it's
priced below some wholesale quotes.

Yesterday, I finished a hood with 2 - 40 Watt lamps.
I built the hood from 3/4 inch pine using some suggestions
that AH sent along with the light kit. Installing the
lamps was straightforward and they look real good.
Building the hood was the hardest part of the project.

Recently installed the 2x13Watt kit.

Installation was done into a pre-existing 10G light strip.

Went reasonably easy and the lights look great.

Next project, make box for the 55Watt kit I bought with it.

Highly recommended.
