I have some Java Ferns in my tank that are just over 2 months old and
they seem to be doing just fine in general. I have about six plants,
with 1-2 leaves apiece on them so far. Of those six plants, only one has
since shot out a new leaf. Now about all of the plants are developing
baby plants of various sizes (up to 1" or so in length now) near the top
half of the older leaves.

So, I am wondering: Is this a typical growth rate? Is the sprouting of
new plants off the old leaves a sign that they will soon go? And in that
case, should I prune out these leaves and let the plant put the energy
into producing new ones, or should i just plant this next generation?

Tank stats: 20G (long) with stock (read: mediocre) hood lighting and a
family of platies.
