Anyone know if using pumice in an African tank would cause any
problems??

By 'Pumice I assume you mean volcanic rock sold as a stone for removing
rough skin... kind of pale gray in color, almost charcoal in color when wet?

If it is bought shaped (smooth) from say the 'body shop', it may well have
some kind of fungicide but it is doubtful...

Check your source to find out if it has been treated in anyway, other than
that.. as long as you clean it and sterilize it as you would anything else
(rock, slate etc...) it will be good in your tank.

The most common form of lava rocks used is a reddish color and looks / feels
a lot more rougher.

The only draw back with using a lot of these lava rocks is that the majority
tend to become soft, break up after time.

Both of these 'lava' derived rocks have the advantage of being easy to shape
yourself with tools and sand paper to form caves etc...

As with all new additions of stones / rocks/ gravel... take a few cups of
water from your tank, test it... put some of the pumice in the water for a
few days and then test the water again... if there are no changes then all
will be ok.
