I recently built a koi pond with about 1100 galons and a water fall
using a large bio filter. Fish and water color appears fine, but I am
getting a brown almost black cover in the water fall where water runs.
Is this algae? is it safe? Thanks, Fredy

From your description it sounds like algae.

yes, algae.. and it's a good thing... every once in a while you can scrape
it off... but it's part of the ecosystem and serves it's purpose...

Waterfalls are usually one of the first places for algae to take hold, due
to the negligible depth of water coupled with presumably high sunlight
levels. Algae is safe as in almost any aquatic plant, and will do its part
in keeping the water healthy. Your koi may also graze on it if they can
reach it.
