I work in a bakery, so i thought i might ask the question.

I believe they would eat them, but probably if you want, feed them with
other food supplements
like probably once in a while, feed them the proper fish food.

Bread probably does not contain all the necessary nutrients required by
them. Over here, I do
see fish bread which I use to feed my fishes when I was young.

Probably OK. Novel idea. Steamed rice and lettuce are OK too but none of
these are likely to provide much in the way of a balanced diet.

It would be okay, just try to supplement it with other foods, and don't use
any kind of bread with a greasy feel to it (like croissant [sp?] bread).

Fish don't get tired of foods like we do. In the wild they don't exactly
enjoy a lot of variety. I'm not even sure they can digest bread as they are
designed to eat insects and larvae.

Spent a year in the Far East, and the maid only fed rice to
the goldfish in the small pond in the backyard.Never fed
fish foods, and although some insects probably made their
way into the fish's diet,I'm sure not enough insects to add
much protein, and the goldfish grew and appeared healthy.

I read once that people fed bread crumbs to aquarium fish before there
was prepared fish food. I think it's a little low in protein, though.
My guppy flake food says 42% protein. The only bread label I have in
the house says 3 g of protein per 41 g serving. I'm not sure how they
calculate the % protein, but if it's 3 g divided by 41 g, it's nowhere
near 40%. It's less than 10%. My guess is that your guppy fry might
survive on it, but that they won't grow as rapidly or as large.
Educated guess but, nevertheless, a guess.

Rice is a pretty good source of protein, actually. Just because it
isn't meat doesn't mean it doesn't have any protein in it. Most
foods have some protein - meat just happens to have a lot more of
it than most veggies.

Fish burn protein for energy rather than carbohydrates (we burn
carbohydrates), so they need a lot more of it than we do. Fish
fry also need a fair bit of the right kinds of fat (what kinds
and how much varies by species) to grow well.

I wouldn't think it would be a very good staple diet, especially not
for growing fish. They need a variety of nutrients, which I'm sure
the bread does not fully supply. Just a cheapo tropical flake,
crushed very fine, should do well. It'll have at least approximately
the right amount of protein, fat, fiber, and carbo, as well as vitamin
supplementation.

You've heard the expression, "Man cannot live on bread alone," I'm
sure. Well, there's a reason for it...

Goldfish are omnivores and are able to eat just about anything. I'm
not sure guppies, especially growing fry, could extract much of
anything nutritious out of bread or rice or oatmeal. Also, goldfish
are very adept at eating insects and their larvae. You wouldn't
believe the amount pond fish can eat in a day. I'm sure the rice was
supplementing the insect diet and not the other way around.

Insects are extremely high in protein.

What I recall about wheat:

Hard wheat (found in pasta) is higher in protein than
soft wheat (more often found in breads) and the protein
content of hard wheat off the farm can be as high as
15-16%. The wheat found in pastas seems diluted, as it
typically averages about 10% protein. As a plant source
of protein goes, wheat is a pretty good one, but as there
are a lot of kinds of wheat, YMMV.

Better than breadcrumbs, but not ideal. But at least it's better than
the other way around, feeding tropical flakes to goldfish...
