3 of my 7 gold fish (fan tail) have their gill
exposed, one sided.

You can see the red gill, the gill cover seems to have shrunk so much that
about 1/4 inch wide of red gill is exposed. The other side is OK.

how can I treat the sick fish ? will submerging in saline water help?

This could be that the gill cover has rotted, but if the gill cover just
looks normal, not ragged, then it could be that the gill itself has
enlarged for some reason in response to parasites or toxins. Do the
physical found in the disease section of http://puregold.aquaria.net/
Other than that, it could be this is the way they have been, but suddenly
it doesnt look right.
How much water are these fish in what are the water parameters?

The tank/aquarium is 3' by 2' by 2 ' height, the water level is about 1'9"
deep.

I do not have tool to measure the nitrate, nitrite and the ammonia level.

The fish are all moved from a pond which I emptied 2 weeks ago.

The 3 fish were already carrying the exposed gills when I netted them up
from the pond which was full of mud when the fish were netted.

Hi..

I have a pom pon and another fancy fish that both have exposed gills. The
pom pon looks like the gill covers got "folded back" so that the last bit
that would normally seal the gills against the mid-body is instead facing
the head. The fish has lived that way since I bought him (9 months ago) no
problems. I can post a phto if anyone wants to see it..

The other fancy fish has one damaged gill cover - looks like it was attacked
or damaged against a tank ornament (again, before I took ownership a year or
so ago). It's healed now, but leaves the gills perminantly exposed on one
side. It's also quite normal in lifestyle of any goldfish.

So.. i guess it's not harmfull in any way, just a but "visually different".

Ok, that means you got about a 55 gallon tank and 7 fish in there. You
dont say what kind of filter you have on there, or how much water you are
changing each day, but that many fish in that size tank they are being
exposed to ammonia and nitrite. The gills could be badly irritated, but if
they are not at the top of the tank gasping for air, then the gills arent
really in trouble. Solo

that is a mutation, some lines of fish are bred for that. Solo
