compatable(sp)?They are in a 29 gallon tank.

From what I've been told, the two should be compatible. Jack dempseys
are pretty tough customers. Depending on how long they've been together,
they are probably establishing who's boss and who's not. If you get
really concerned, maybe one or even two compatible tankmates would
spread the aggression out a little. It all depends upon your filtration
and the adult sizes of the fish you'd add.

I had 3 Texas Cichlids in with 2 Dempseys.......both are territorial, but
with enough room, they should be alright.

JDs can reach 8 inches, texas 10. Depending on where you read, it is
frequently not advised to house these bad boys with their own species.
Some sources state that adult JDs will fight to the death. The
reputable LFS in my area don't want to sell you 2 JDs, for the reason
stated.

They are compatible. But, not in that size of a tank. They will eventually
outgrow it. I think the problem lies in that the texas being more
aggressive wants to defend the whole tank as its territory. The only
solutions are to add more hiding areas for the dempsey or get more fish that
the texas can take out its aggression on. But, keep in mind more fish will
result in a larger tank sooner. Ron

I have a 5 inch female JD with a 5 inch male TC. I used a plexi
separater for a week to keep TC from killing JD. Reunited at 76 degrees
they seemed cold. Turned up the heat (81F) and they attempted to mate.
Nest buildind, tail slapping and lip locking. No eggs though and the lip
locking was injuring TCs nose. Plexi separated again for 3 weeks with
several trial reunions all resulting in JD immediately starting her
horny dance. TC remembers the pain though. 5th try and JD is no longer
trying to mate (temperature down to 79F) JD rules the tank and TC has
nice narrow hiding places. I strongly reccomend plexi separation and
temperature adjustments. While JD does rule the tank the harrassment is
mild. NO fin nipping.
