I remember my red devil. was about 2 to 3" when first got him. was
attracted to his deep orange color. then he slowly grew and started
beating up and killing my colorful mix of african and new world cichlids
in my 60 g i.e. firemouth, dempsey, ps. zebra, pike crenicichla sp.,
managuense, grn terror, convicts, ornate bichir, plecostomus, tiger barb,
gourami, tin foil barb. you name it, it was in there (i know it's an
unrecommended mix, but i was a beginner who had to have every fish).
everyday i come home from school and work, there was always a new member
of the tattered beat up fish [club] in the upper corner clinging for its
life. i was getting tired of setting up hospital tanks and nursing the
beat up ones to health, also getting all its fins to grow back nice
again. so one day i got this idea, i took a small plastic square
stationery basket, turned it upside down in the quarium and put the red
devil inside it, weighed it w/ a rock. it was like his little jail for
being bad, but he had enough room in it to swim around and dig a bit.
also kept him from beating up and killing the other fish. he could still
eat and breath. the food would freely flow through the plastic bars, but
he seemed to be getting meaner the longer he was in there. as if the
other fish was teasing him through his plastic bars. so i felt bad after
about a couple of weeks and let him out. the next day there was so much
death and destruction. gravel dug up to the ug plates and piled very
high on one side, 2 dead ones ps. zebra and convict > looked like someone
had chewed them whole and spit them back out. 3 tattered ones near death,
managuense, j. dempsey, and chocolate cichlid. red devil was still
chasing the others to see who else he could kill. the red devil's chases
would be so strong and violent that water would frequently spill over the
sides of the tank. i was so sad to make the decision to give it away, i
called up my friend who had t. buttikoferi and other tough fish, maybe he
can handle my red devil.
WRONG! same death and destruction deal, he was so pissed. he took it
straight to the toilet and flushed it, but it was a large fish and got
stuck and clogged his toilet. it's tail would flap when you flush so it
still seemed alive. he tried to grind it up by sticking a straightened
out hanger and twisting and turning it and flushing to unclog it, but no
luck. he had to call and pay a plumber to get it out.
what a horrible end to my little friend.
the moral of the story is . . they don't call them red devils for
nothing.
