I've recently purchased a 55 gal. tank, which I will be filtering with a
Fluval
304.

I'd like to keep Central American Cichlids, specifically the following:

Jack Dempsey (C. octofasciatum)

Convict Cichlid (C. nigrofasciatum)

Salvini Cichlid (C. salvini)

Firemouth (C. meeki)

I'd like to keep, if possible, a few of each of these fish. Of all the
fish,
I'm absolutely going to keep the Convicts. However, I'm not sure how well
Jack
Dempsey's will go with them. Has anyone held these fish together
successfully?
What about the other fish? I think the Salvini and Firemouth are much more
passive, considering what I've read.

Also, I'd like some recommendations about any other Central American
Cichlids I
could keep with convicts. I'm trying to keep strictly to one geographic
area,
so please don't advise that I keep Malawi Cichlids with the Convicts or
anything like that.

Thanks for your help. This group has been great in the past, and I expect
it
will continue to be.

The firemouth probably would not do well since they are mostly show and not
equipted to put up much of a fight. The salvini on the otherhand I think are one
of the most aggressive cichlids for their size and would probably terrorize the
convicts and threaten the Dempsey. Other possible suggestions include rainbow
cichlids and any of the archocentrus sp (convict family) - though I would not keep
them with convicts in the same tanks. In a 55 you will be limited to what you can
keep but C. nicaraguense are relatively peaceful for their size and have beautiful
coloration and will take care of any snails, C. seiboldi , alfari, altifrons,
chocolate cichlids and panamense are all reasonably sized cichlids that may also
get along well (unless they breed). I had "F-cichlids" which are one of the
2-types of chocolate cichlids with nicaraguense in a 55 without problems but more
space would have been better. I have also had panamense but they were by
themselves.

I have JD's, a Salivini, Convict and other SA/CAs in a 120g tank
and they all get along - mainly by staying out of each other's way and
avoiding the big guys in the tank (Oscars, Red Devil, jaguar and other
"guapotes']. In a 52g, I have a Firemouth w/2 severums, jurupari,
chocolate cichlid, and corys. They get along, but when a new fish is
put in the Firemouth puts on an impressive display of gill flaring and
charging until he decides to let the newcomer stay. Even the jurupari
chuffs and puffs for awhile.

Salvinis are not passive, especially if they are breeding, which is
why I don't keep breeding pairs (or of anything else) in my tanks. My
Salvini would aggressively charge my jaguar until he just got too big.

####################################

First off lets clear up that Salvini are very aggresive cichlids!! They are
nasty lukers that will eat anything that they can fit into their large mouths.
They are also great at eating the eyes out of other fish too. I think they are
some of the nicest looking Central American cichlids that you can see in
breeding color. I would not put them in your mix @ all. They have a mouth full
of dentition

Now the Firemouths act tough, they are NOT! All bluff, no teeth in their mouth
at all. They are the least aggresive cichlid that you want to put into your
tank. So yes they are mild for sure. Again another beautiful fish. You need to
know that they are less tolerant of poor water quality. They will be the first
to die off, or get ill if the water quality slips into unsafe levels.

Hope this helps,
Steve

No kidding that Salvinis are nasty. I had 8 stitches to prove it.
I was cleaning the tank and bumped their nest accidentally and " Daddy" bit me
more than 5 times in the time it took to pull my hand out of the water.
My pair also killed the 11 inch Oscar I had in with them, along with 4 other
large cichlids, all within 12 hours.

My recommendation is to not put them in a tank with any timid fish like Oscars
, Pirahnas , Manageunsas , or Dempseys. And compared to Salvinis , all of these
"nasty" fish ARE pretty mild.

I don't know how much this will help but my tank is a 55 gallon and i
have 2... 5 inch managuanses and a smaller salvini about 3 1/2 inches.
along with a catfish and a sucker. I don't have any problems with the
salvini....although they can be an aggressive fish .... if they are
smaller they tend to just hide more then anything. although he is
small ...and of course will get bigger ... he will never grow as big as
the managuanses so if anything the managuanses will end up killing him.
but salvinis are tough enough to hold their own agianst fish 2 times
their size....but they deffinatly ...in my opinion....need to be in a
tank with fish who will dominate them but not kill em...like my
managuanses.

Kristi,
Remember, your managuense are really just babies still. They will kill that
salvini in time.

I have Jag 5" size also together with my 5" Jack. My Jack dominates all
tankmates in the meanwhile. my male managuense is not agressive yet. I
understand that he can be when he becomes bigger. but from another point of
view I raised then from 1" and this can help avoid deaths. Also I have 2 1"
Oscars. They are doing well. Tank is 90gal.
