I've recently purchased a 55 gal. tank, which I will be filtering with a
Fluval
304.
I'd like to keep Central American Cichlids, specifically the following:
Jack Dempsey (C. octofasciatum)
Convict Cichlid (C. nigrofasciatum)
Salvini Cichlid (C. salvini)
Firemouth (C. meeki)
I'd like to keep, if possible, a few of each of these fish. Of all the
fish,
I'm absolutely going to keep the Convicts. However, I'm not sure how well
Jack
Dempsey's will go with them. Has anyone held these fish together
successfully?
What about the other fish? I think the Salvini and Firemouth are much more
passive, considering what I've read.
Also, I'd like some recommendations about any other Central American
Cichlids I
could keep with convicts. I'm trying to keep strictly to one geographic
area,
so please don't advise that I keep Malawi Cichlids with the Convicts or
anything like that.
Thanks for your help. This group has been great in the past, and I expect
it
will continue to be.

Salvinis are not passive, especially if they are breeding, which is
why I don't keep breeding pairs (or of anything else) in my tanks. My
Salvini would aggressively charge my jaguar until he just got too big.

First off lets clear up that Salvini are very aggresive cichlids!! They are
nasty lukers that will eat anything that they can fit into their large mouths.
They are also great at eating the eyes out of other fish too. I think they are
some of the nicest looking Central American cichlids that you can see in
breeding color. I would not put them in your mix @ all. They have a mouth full
of dentition
Now the Firemouths act tough, they are NOT! All bluff, no teeth in their mouth
at all. They are the least aggresive cichlid that you want to put into your
tank. So yes they are mild for sure. Again another beautiful fish. You need to
know that they are less tolerant of poor water quality. They will be the first
to die off, or get ill if the water quality slips into unsafe levels.
Hope this helps,
Steve

My recommendation is to not put them in a tank with any timid fish like Oscars
, Pirahnas , Manageunsas , or Dempseys. And compared to Salvinis , all of these
"nasty" fish ARE pretty mild.
