bare bottom tank 6*2*2 (cabinent )setup questions.
The tank is target for the discus when they grow out of the grow out
tank.
Or if it doesn't work out. For a goldfish show tank or cichlid show
tank if
things go wrong by keeping the discus at the entrance hall

a) good idea to drill the bottom of the tank before setup for future
wet dry or just to drain water?

b)painting the bottom? of the tank or the foam with what colour? paint
the back of the tank.(the side against the wall)?

c) single 300 w heater, canister filer.... (one of those clone eheim,
made in china that cost only 200 aus 1200L/hr rated...)

d) should I put drift wood or clay flower pot for the discus to hide?

e) any reason against plant in pot in a bare bottom tank

Thanks in advance.

price check for Melbourne. aus $1200 for 6x2x2 and pine cabinet/hood
stained filter and heater aus $250

does it sounds right?

Thanks again

Why not buy one of those picture background, cheap and easy to change.

Not as good as EHEIM for sure. $250 can get EHEIM 2217 with filter media...

Too pricey, have you shop around? Here in Syd $900. Even cheaper if you
bother making your own stand and hood.

I'd be very interested to know where you can get an EHEIM 2217 for only
$250! The best I have seen them for is around the $350 mark with media/taps.

You are talking $250AU right ?

Try this link Steve,
http://tools.addme.com/servlet/iStore?id=104126S&cat=Filtration

I never bought stuff from these guys before, but people say they're ok...
It's worth a try I suppose...

I would suggest a second 300 w heater as a backup if the first one fails.
The ideal temperature for discus is 82 to 88 F and you may have trouble
maintaining that if the room temperature is 72 F.
Drilling tanks is not my favourite pastime. Adding another cannister
filter when needed is a better option.
Giving the discus hiding places is important. Driftwood or other items are
useful for this.
Potted plants are great in the setup that you discribe.
If you need more biological filtration, go for a fluidized bed instead of
a wet/dry - lower cost, less space, more efficient.
Good luck

I have ordered the tank on Sat. ~3 weeks delivery. My superior has
make up her mind on Rosewood as the stain finally.
a) drilling the hole but plug it up (for future wc ...) any optinion
against it.
(the guy selling me the stuff, is going to drill the tank and drill
the cabinet)

b)not going to paint the bottom but put a colour paper card on the
bottom.
(probably blue or don't bother.

c) heater Q. 2 300 W or 2 200 W. What is the opinion on 600w heater on
~160G?

d) hiding place... definitely. (clay flower pot,
I have burnt a discus badly probably on Sat. When I was cleaning
filters...
It got scared and hide against the heater. burnt a 1 square inch
wound. on
it. I didn't use heater guard.
e) look at 2217, the clone looks more like a eheim pro. I probably go
with the clone. The other choice is to move the 2 fluval 304 from the
bare bottom discus tank into the new tank.

The older 304 is easy to prime, the new one is pain in the bottom.
thanks in advance

Hi Steve.
May I ask what is the reason choosing 2217 vs the eco series or the pro series?
How easy is to prime a 2217 during cleaning?
