Black ghost looks similar to a khuli loach in body shap it is a little
thinner. Its pitch black and has a white stripe down it's back and and
moves in an "undulating" manner. I've kept these and they are GREAT but in
my opinion they don't do very well with other fish, but they do do well
with each other. If your going to keep them here are my recommendations.
I had a low ph just under 7 some place between 6.5-6.8 softer water
lots of places to hide such as tubes or pipes (I used those plastic tubes
that you can get for rodent cages because they are translucent and youcan
see the fish in them). Also I suggest floating plants to shade some of the
light. I found this fish GREAT To keep becuse they have awsome
personalities and are great to watch.
thats just my 0.2(probably spelled wrong)

Actually this could be cool, because I am in the proccess of geting my 55
gallon tank going. The main fish I want to work on are Julidochromis
malieri and transcrptus I'd liek to go with about 8 of these and perhaps a
couple of other Tanganykins any suggestions would be great. I would not be
against going with all julies. This will be my first attempt with africans
not from malawi so any help from people experienced with these fish would
be great. Thanks.

he was bullied when he was in there before. the pacu is dominated by the
dempsey in the 20 gallon, even though his teeth are huge. none of the fish
have ever bothered the frogs. they just do their own thing. in the 46 gallon
the salvini, dempsey and red devil are in spawning colors. if the dempsey
would only lay eggs. not too much hostility, just a little chasing, until the
other day. my girlfriend noticed the red devil's left fin was somewhat
missing. i'm not sure who did it though. nobody has been bugging him. i'm
planning on moving in january and with that getting a 125 gallon tank. i can't

20 P. kenyi juvies (just sold 20 of this same brood, along with parents. Will
be selling all.)

3 C. afra (just arrived 5 days ago - m/f the third, possible f)
20 gallon Malawi - fry
17 L. caeruleus fry - 3 weeks+/-
10 gallon - Tanganyika quarantine
6 C. leptosoma "New Neon Flash" - juvie (just barely!), arrived 5 days ago
(will be moving some fish around and selling some of our others this weekend to
free up this one for a quarantine tank, and moving the leptosoma to a 20 gal to
grow out.)
pH in all tanks 8.2 - 8.3 with the exception of the Tang about 8.4 - 8.5, temps
80 (this may be hard to maintain in the kiddie pool with the heat wave here -
may need to to "daily" exchanges to keep the temp down very soon), weekly H20
changes on Malawians of about 20 %, Tang about 10 - 15%. Add salt, epsom
salts, and SeaBuffer pH and Alkalinity Booster. Vaired diet - spirulina
flakes, Nemos (live), zooplankton, frozen brine shimp and blood worms (once a
week for Malawians, more frequently for Tangs), carnivore food sticks(for
Tangs), clams (ground up - for Tangs); DoroMin food sticks, Hikari Bio-Gold and
occasional lettuce, spinach or zucchini for the Malawi kids.

Anyhow, here's what we've done so far:
20gal
3 3" Bolivian Rams (1m 2f)
10 .75" Neon Tetras
3 2" Peppered Corys
1 4" Sailfin Pl*co
This tank is *heavily* planted with Amazon Swords and Banana Plants. Also,
there is a nice piece of driftwood and some pretty rock work. The pH is
6.5, no ammonia, no nitrite. There is an Aquaclear200 running on it, and
there is much aeration.
10 gal
1 1.75" Clown Pl*co
7 .75" Tiger Barbs
1 2.5" Red-Tailed Shark
This tank is also panted (but not as much as the other one) and also has
some pretty rock work in it. We have an AquaclearMini on it, and a lot of
aeration too. The pH is 7.0, no ammonia, no nitrite.
110 gallon:
1) Managuense pair 8-9" each
2) Citrinellum 7"
3) Labiatum 5" & 3"
4) Bristlenose Pleco 6"
5) Managuense fry (a whole bunch)
Any suggestions here? Possibly move two labiatum to 70 gal. As a pair,
the managuense are formidable. Do I dare separate them? The citrinellum
pushed them around...until they layed eggs.
70 gallon:
1) Synspillum 3"
2) Skunk Botia 2"
It's hard to medicate a 70 gal tank for Ick.
Lost:
1) Dovii 3"
2) Nicaraguense 5"
3) Red Hump 4"
4) Balzanii 3"
5) Skunk Botia 2" (one of the founding fathers of this hobby for me)
Okay, been a week and the synspillum is doing fine. Has the Ick been
retarded enough to either a) move the synspillum or b) add fish.
Any suggestions here?
10 gallon:
Empty. Just in case you're wondering, I dumped everything out of the
10 gallon so I can start over with some dwarfs and put it in my bedroom.
Then, the Ick appeared in the 70 gallon tank. Guess what, no hospital
tank!

Substrate a mixture of tumbled gravel, and course sand
Plants:
1 large sword
6 smal palm-like plants (can't remember species)
Medium-sized driftwood
Ph= Ranges from (7.0 @ water change to 6.5 1 week later)
Fish:
4 White Tetras (Larry, Daryl, Daryl & Luther)
6 Serpae Tetras
6 Zebra Danios
4 Pearl Danios
1 Male & 2 Female Bozmani Rainbow - An arranged marriage. Originally
female spent most of her
time hiding among the plants & was chased by the male when she emerged.
Recently they have settled
into the relationship & spend a lot of time practicing their
synchronized swimming.
1 Male & 1 Femal Dwarf Gourami - A very happy couple from the outset.
Female is very attentive of the male.
3 Ottosynclus (The law firm of Dewy, Cheatham & Howe - Bottom-feeding
scum-sucking scavengers)
1 Plecostomus (The Judge - A bottom-feeding, scum-sucking scavenger with
political influence)
1 Clown Loach (A mistake - Purchased because LFS said would keep down
snails. He does, but he's
doubled in size & my research tells me he will grow to about a foot
long. I plan to take him back to the LFS
pretty soon -- A shame though, because he is a pretty neat guy)
** A little overpopulated perhaps, but everyone seems happy as long as I
keep up with the water changes.
Living Room @ Home
===================
10 Gal:
External power filter
1 air stone
Artificial ivy-like plant (makes a sort of jungle on 1 side of tank)
Substrate mixed gravel & course sand
3 caves constructed of slate fragments & petrified wood
3 tsp. ciclid chemistry
ph = 8.0
4 Zebra Danios
1 Lamprolougus Leilupi (<1")
1 Julidochromis Marlieri (<1/2")
** When I first started the tank, it looked more like a water-filled rock
garden than a fish tank - Pretty, but no fish. The Danios were so fast you
couldn't get a look at them, and the africans stayed mostly in the caves.
Recently, however, the africans have emerged, and it is quite a pretty
setup. Leilupi pretty much claims the two largest caves. Juli prowles
among the vines & in one of the caves. Both come out to feed & flare their
fins at one another. The Danios were added about a week after the africans
& seemed to help the africans get used to their surroundings. I'll find
another home for them before the africans get big enough to do them harm.
========
By the way, I purchased a "Quick Cam VC" by Connectix for $100 at circuit
city. This "video phone" plugs into the parrallel port & PS2 keyboard
port. I will focus at a distance of 1 inch to infinity, and produce
true-colour snapshots or avi videos. I have had a wonderful time
photographing and filming the fish in both tanks.

I had a P. kenyi in this tank for 2 days, but had to remove her.. the male

let her come out to eat. Big tough guy... hehe..

I have:
(2) 3" M. Johannii (both male)
(3) 2-3" Yellow Labidochromis (2 male, 1 female)
(3) 3-4" Red Zebras (all female)
(2) 4" M. Parallelus (1 male, 1 female)
(6) 3" Boesemani Rainbows
(1) 5" Common Pleco
Another question: Would the introduction of female Johanniis increase the
aggression or help the situation?
Thanks, Paul.
Is this tank overcrowded?<
The general rule for male m.johanni's is that you can't have more than one per
tank. Go ahead and sell/take the dominant one back to the LFS.
And no, I didn't think your tank was overcrowded.

I have two males in my 60, and they leave each other alone. Both have
dominant coloration.
There are exceptions to every rule, but he already said the dominant one was so
mean he was afraid it was going to kill something, so he should give it away
regardless of your success. BTW, I had two males in a 55 ga (one stayed yellow
for a very long time, thought it was female) and it did NOT work out. One was
just plain mean though. The other was a much better king (after we sold the
mean one).

Candi,
I currently have about 2 Female and 5 Male Mel. Johanni in a tank (40 gallon
breeder) with a lot of rock work. So far so good, no outright attacking or
continuous aggression. Maybe I am lucky, but no one ever got hurt. BTW I got them
when they were about 1/2 inch long, and I had them for about 10 months now
(currently about 2-2 1/2 inches)
Rock
1 Pseudotropheus Lombardoi male 3.5"
1 Melanochromis Auratus male 3.5"
1 Labeotropheus Trewavase male 3"
2 Pseudotropheus Estherae ? 2.5 "
1 Pseudotropheus Zebra ? 2"
3 Labidochromis Caeruleus (1m + 2f) 2"
4 Labidochromis Caeruleus fry 0.5"
Heres what I have in my 40 gallon
Alberto (Italy)
30 gal
4 x Texas Cichlid (1 inch each) (Uncertain which variety)
6 x Zebra Danio (1 inch each)
2 x Plec (3 inches each)
10gal
5 guppies
2 black mollies
2 Swordtails
1 brown cat fish
2 algae eaters
20long
1 foot long cat fish
Two 10 Gal's to isolate females w/ clutches and/or fry.
1) Can the 1 foot long catfish turn in that tank?
2) Are the 3 oscars and 3 pacu really alive in the 20 gal?
3) How big are the oscars and pacu?

I just bought a bran spankin new 100 gal. for less than $200.
It seems that ALL-Glass Aquarium company has discontinued the 100
gallon, so they are giving them to LFS for $99. and then, you pay a bit
more.... SO if you have a 2 foot by 5 foot space available in your
house, now is the time to get a 100 gallon tank! Oh yeah, then ya still
gotta purchase all the accesories, so maybe $300 isn't enough... still,
if your parents let you get those monster fish, I am sure they will come
to see the importance of a large tank, and jump at the opportunity to
get one cheap... check the paper every once and a while for used tanks
too. Hope this helps... On the other hand, maybe there is no problem?:

Become who you are...
....There are no guarantees.
I can't resist any longer. Here it comes... We understand if you can't afford
a bigger tank. Not everyone has $300 spare change. But you weren't forced to
buy these fish. You aren't forced to keep them. A foot long catfish in a 20
gallon is just cruel. All these posts "how often should I change the water in
my 10 gallon Oscar tank, yeah I know he's crowded but poor me can't afford a
bigger tank....." then you just shouldn't have an Oscar. Get the tank first
and THEN the Oscar. No money is no excuse for cruelty.
I agree with Candi. At one point in time I had a jet black oscar,
most beautiful I'd ever seen. When he outgrew the tank, I gave him
away. I knew full well that my chances of getting another one are
pretty slim, but I gave him away because having a miserable, unhealthy
fish reflects (IHMO) on the owner.
--
Candi, that is SO well said!
I was all psyched to get a little oscar and put it in my 29 gallon,
thinking that would be fine for awhile... but then at the LFS I
encountered a 12" monster Oscar in a 50 gallon ( 18"x18"x36" ), and it
was down-right pathetic to see that big fish confined to such a small
world. I knew then that nothing less than a 72" long 18" wide tank would
do for fish of that size.... thankfully there are plenty of fascinating
fish that don't get so huge!
