I'm wondering if there are any posters or lurkers from Sedona,AZ that
would like to do some sleuthing...
I'm trying to get information (mostly value and availability) on artist
Vaughn Shoemaker. I've checked all the online sources for auction
records since I've been online (June 1997) and never see any results. I
was told that paintings by him are cherished and seldom make it to
auction.
Vaughn Shoemaker won two Pulitzer prizes for his editorial cartoons, but
was also and accomplished painter as well as an instructor at the
Chicago Art Institute. His early work was in watercolor and his later
work was oil. He was b.1902-d.1991 and I've got a great watercolor of an
old wooden covered bridge titled "Limestone Creek, Lemont,ILL. dated
1922 (one of his very early works). Sight size 16 3/4" x 17 3/4".
Label states: M. O'Brien & Sons, Art Galleries, 673 No. Michigan Ave.,
Chicago,ILL.
The estate and paintings of Vaughn Shoemaker are being handled by El
Prado Galleries of Sedona,AZ. I called them in 1993 to get an idea of
value and availability of his early watercolor work and they were
reluctant to discuss my painting with me.
I'd like someone that lives close to Sedona to wander into the gallery
and find out whatever they can in regards to his early work. I'm going
to send this painting to auction and there may be a sleuthing fee from
the proceeds.
Speaking of auctions (once again)... what's the best auction house in
the Chicago area for art ?

for the inquisitive, we're looking to buy a house,we've been paying
rent on our apt/condo for 18 1/2 years.... oy-vey !
when our paintings are sold, we can discuss Beacon Scores... imo

Congrats! A house? Lawn to mow? In Florida?

I *did* have an online acquaintance from Sedona.....but he and
his wife moved from there a few years ago.

Let's see... my books are kind of old and out of date, but let's look
anyway.

He's listed in "The Franklin and James Decade Review, American Artists
at Auction 1/83-1/93".

Eleven pen and ink drawings went up for auction in 1989 and 1990 at
Weschler's in Washington D.C. They were all about the same size, appx.
17" x 13". They were all estimated at 600-800 and only one of them
sold. It brought $600. A group of three political cartoons sold for
$100 at Freeman's in Philadelphia.

My old copy of Davenports lists a drawing that sold for $450 at
Freeman's.

Hope that helps a little, old buddy.

T, thanks for the help. I know that his drawings and political cartoons
pop up from time to time, but he was in the habit of painting landscapes
in the different areas that he visited. As mentioned before, he started
out in watercolor and moved on to oils later. I did find out from
someone at that gallery in Sedona who mentioned that his oils were
selling for around $10,000 (this was a couple of years after his death),
but they weren't giving up any info on his earlier watercolor work
(perhaps they didn't have any).
If any lurkers are reading this and don't want to post online, you may
reach me by adding the number 3 behind the SmorgassBored in the above
e-mail header.

I wait with bait on my breath...
