Yes! And how about those folks that think they are getting artsy by
putting the object on a complex piece of lace or brightly patterned
textile? Or those that artfully place a vase of flowers next to the
object or give you a landscape of their back yard? When one is viewing
an object for sale in a photograph, the idea is to draw the eye to the
object, anything else is purely distraction and gets in the way, in
addition to taking the photo a much longer time to load. Merchandising
really only works well in a retail store where a person is physically
present, in my opinion.
I had one lady send me some .jpgs of jewelry. She had put these 1" pins
in the middle of 18" flower arrangements. Of course, she had to get a
million miles away to get the whole, huge flower arrangement in the .jpg
and I couldn't even see the pins, they looked like bugs or something on
the flowers. Pretty funny! Susan

... and my favorite pet peeve, all that html garbage that some sellers
tart up their listings with! I've seen animated graphics of dogs running
around, happy faces, *extremely well-written* html that imposes itself on
the entire listing so I can't even read the text... well, I could go on
for days.
News flash: a) it doesn't make me want to buy the item any more, and b)
sometimes I get so annoyed with it that I just click back out and never
even see the item!

It's getting worse, Terri. Just yesterday an innocent wandered into the
Support Q&A Board and complained that she was getting notes from people
saying her listings don't load all the way.
Gee, might have had something to do with the MIDI (sound) file she attached
to each one. Jumpin' Jehosephat, who in tarnation needs to have MUSIC
playing on their auction listings? This might actually make sense if it
were a music box being sold or something...but this lady slapped it on all
her auctions.

I went to a website today to try and do some research (and perhaps business)
and was so distracted by the music that I gave up. I kept trying to find
some way to turn if OFF! Midi music certainly has its place - but on
collectibles sites - or ebay - it's a real aggravation. IMO.

My speakers have been turned off for a long time. I really don't miss them
at all. If your speakers don't have an on/off switch, Windows probably has
a switch for sound buried in there somewhere.

Ashley:
Go by pixel width, not inches. And check to see that you have the images
scanned and saved at 72 dpi.
If you save your images as jpgs or gifs, you can test them by dragging them
into Netscape or IE first to see how big or small they will actually appear
before you upload them.

I've tried that also, Nancy, but nothing seems to help. I use a digital camera
and have changed the pixel width. No matter what I do the pictures are still
huge. Will try some more to get them back to a normal size. I wonder if
others using AOL have noticed this?
Ashley:
Wait...I'm not sure I was being clear enough with what I was suggesting. Don't
mess with the camera settings... figure out how to preview the image size with
your image manipulation software (Photo Enhance) before you save your image as
a .jpg or a .gif file.
In Photo Enhance, is there a menu selection somewhere that says "Image Size"?
With Photoshop (which I use) if I select Image Size when looking at an image
I've imported from my digital camera, it tells me how large or small the image
is, and allows me to adjust the number of dots per inch. I then make
adjustments to the image. For example, I may start out with an image at 1064 x
1064 pixels at 300dpi, reduce it by 70% and save it at 72dpi. If I do that,
I'll see that the image is then, say, 260 by 260 pixels. Then I'll save that
image as a .jpg or a .gif (I almost always use .jpg because that type of
compression works better for photographs. Gif works better for line art.)
It sounds to me like your preferences for this image manipulation software
possibly got out of whack up somehow. Have you gone in to recheck your preferences?
Can you describe to us exactly what you are doing with the image once you
import it from the camera? Maybe that would help us help you. I doubt this is
an AOL problem -- haha, probably the one rare time that we can say that :-)
