I am trying to identify the maker of a suite of china dinnerwares. The mark
is for a Dresden factory as its is marked in the underglaze blue as
"Dresden/Germany", and above, depicts a lamb/sheep(?). Unfortunately, I have
not been able to find a matching mark.

The pattern is a heavily gilt-bordered, floral/rose pattern, and appears early
to mid twentieth century.

The producer was probably A Lamm, who founded a decorating studio in
1887. According to Danckert (European Porcelain) the firm was involved
in court proceedings with KPM Meissen as late as 1943. Danckert says
'the products are of outstanding quality'.

Bingo! I do believe you're right....I searched one of my many books on
pottery & marks & found it in "A Dictionary of Marks" by Margaret
MacDonald-Taylor
(Hawthorn Books, NY, Rev. Am. Edition, 1968, pg. 233)...the entry is...

Lamm, A.: (.fl from 1887)
Dresden porcelain decorator working in the Meissen style.
(the mark is simple line drawing of a lamb, facing to the left. The one
odd character-
istic of the lamb is that it appears to have an overly fat & long tail..
the ground is
indicated by a slightly wavy line above "dresden." "dresden" is all
lowercase with
the leading "d" arcing up to the wavy ground line, not touching but just
to the left of
where the wavy line begins. Hope this helps.

I have a mark I would really like help with. I can't find it in any of
the books I have. Its on a 10.5" gold banded, white plate, painted with
fruit in the center-purple grapes, a pear and a strawberry.

Actually, it looks like two marks. The top one, in green has PMR above a
figure of a bird on the top and a sunburst on the bottom. Below the
figure is BAVARIA and in script below that in script is Targer, Co. Below
that, is Germany.

The next mark is a shield shape outlined in black and colored inside a
gray-blue. All inside the shield vertically, are: GOLDEN CROWN, a crown
figure, E&R, 1886.

Upper and lower case lettering is as I've written it.

Can anyone help? I would certainly appreciate it!

Thanks'

Julie

Hi Julie,

Here is what I found in Kovel's Dictionary of Marks (c. 1986):

The first mark (PMR) is for the JAEGER & CO (not "Targer"), which was
in operation up til 1979. (information found on page 24, item G)

The second mark (E&R) is for the EBELING & REUSS CO. of Devon, Penn. (USA),
as the US importer of PMR. This mark was used from 1955 - present.
(information found on page 111, item P)

Hope this helps.

I found the first mark you describe in my copy of "Kovels New Dictionary
or Marks". The compny is actuallyJaeger & Co. but the script makes the J
look like a T. The book says:

Jaeger & Co. Marktredwitz, Bavaria, Germany (W. Germany)...my book is
older...Porcelain. Green underglazw before 1979 (198-present). (Jaeger
Porcelain GMBH. My book (copright 1986) also lists 2 other marks for
Jaeger but neither were as you described.
