Greetings,

I would like to research the artists that created a few paintings that
I currently own. I suspect that these artists are somewhat
contemporary and are not very well known, but the idea of having some
living history to go with the paintings appeals to me. I have tried
several online artist databases including "Who's Who in American Art"
and "World Wide Art Resources", but I need some more datapoints. Are
there any amateur or professional art folks on this newsgroup that can
give a novice a step in the right direction? Two of the artists that
I'm researching are: Carl Jutz and Horst Gruber. The WWIAA database
comes up with a "Carl/Karl Jutz" who lived from 1838-1916, but the
condition of the frame under the canvas (if it's original) leads me to
suspect that my painting is not nearly that old. So far, i've not
discovered a single painter named horst Gruber. Any tips would be
greatly appreciated.

The negative information first. I couldn't discover the painter Horst
Gruber, too.
Carl Jutz (the younger) was born in Duesseldorf on 14th March 1873, he
died during WWI in Russia on 7th August 1915. He was a painter of
landscapes especially good in "forests". He regularily exhibited his
works in Duesseldorf and also in Munich (Glaspalast). There was
published a "Necrolog (obituary)" in: Kunstchronik N.F. XXVII (1916),47.
I haven't read it.

Thanks for the lead. I haven't uncovered any new tidbits yet, but it's
a nice resource.

Hi Derick, there are several databases that could help your search, one in
particular has listings for virtually all art auctions of any note dating
back to 1987. The Database is called ADEC and you can search for artists,
their medium of choice and sales results, the artists and medium searches
are free, the sales results are available for a small fee. To access the
database just type ADEC in your browser search window and follow the
instructions. If your artist is not listed here post back and I'll list
some other sources of information for you.

Mike,

Thanks for the great pointer! There seems to be some very good
information there. One of my challenges, though, is that I don't read
or speak German =/. Also, I am a bit confused on the ordering of
lifespan dates. For example, the most well known Carl Jutz is listed
as:

JUTZ, Carl 1838-1916
JUTZ, Carl 1916-1960
JUTZ, Carl (Attrib.) 1838-1916

And Carl Jutz Jnr. is listed from:

JUTZ, Carl, Jnr. 1873-1915
JUTZ, Carl, Jnr. (Attrib.) 1873-1915

Perhaps the most perplexing problem is that there is little chance
that my painting is one of these older works. First off, mine is
oil(?) on canvas and judging by the condition of the frame, it appears
fairly modern. The subject matter, however (a woman romantically
depicted in a forest) seems somewhat consistent with Carl Jutz'
typical subject matter. Perhaps my painting was done by a modern
artist reproducing an earlier style? Is it common for artists to do
this and sign the painting with the original artists' name?

I noticed that there is no mention of Horst Gruber in this database.
So far, that artist has been extremely ellusive.

Any additional resources would be *greatly* appreciated.

Thanks,
Derick

Why the odd overlapping ranges?

Hi Derrick, you might have to brush up on your German or install one of
those translation programs on your computer and get down to the library,
I've quite a long list of reference books regarding artists and some of
them are in French and German. I will post them here later this week.

I used a web-based German to English translator and did come up with
one interesting listing that may or may not be related to my painting.
The work in question is by Carl Jutz Jr. 1873-1915 and is described as
" Idylla am Waldbach Öl/Leinwand "
which I understand to mean
"Idylla at the forest stream. Oil on Linen"

Now that I have one lead to research, how would I go about finding
pictures of this work in journals/books if such exist?

Hello again, there is one online art database that has images with all
the auction results, it is a subscription service , but if you are
interested in art it might be well worth trying it out, you could always
cancel your subscription after you find your painting.

I'll try and dig up some titles for you, time is a scarce commodity this
week ;~)).

I have posted my answer just a week ago. I want to know whether this
reply could be read in our rec.antique group? Obviously Derick didn't
has received a personal copy either. Karl
