Sorry, not a bargain. I've been collecting piano rolls for years and I
know the markets. $3 each? Most bulk sales run 50-75 cents each.
Classical? Ferget it. You can't even give them away, unless they are
hand played by the foremost aritsts, not staff pianists or (*ugh*)
arranged rolls.
Oh, and by the way, we strongly discourage the placement of ads in
rec.antiques. There is another group, rec.antiques.marketplace, which
was started exclusively for that purpose. Please read the FAQ of any
newsgroup before you post, or prepare to be flamed up one side and down
the other.
And please set a reasonable price based on actual market research before
you start screaming "bargain." Piano rolls are NOT rare, and they are
very hard to sell. Go to eBay and do a search for them -- you'll see.
RAGards and good luck,
Tracy

Perhaps... It really depends upon the manufacturer, the performer (if
there was one) and the piece. I have spent more than $75 for certain
individual rolls, but those are very scarce. I doo keep an eye on eBay
and I have gotten some very good bargains on highly collectible rolls.
My primary area of interest is ragtime, woth a concentration on certain
performers and composers. We have several rollographies, so we have an
idea of what was issued, what has been found and what has been
reproduced. We also know who the good roll arrangers were, what
companies they worked for, and whether or not their names (ususally
pseudonyms) were printed on alleged hand-played rolls.
You may not have been ripped off if you are buying premium rolls. I
would by rolls by Jimmy Blythe, SOME James P. Johnson, Jelly Roll Morton
and any number of others consistently for $15 per roll if I knew they
were scarce and collectible.
I can say with a certain degree of authority that if you bought a single
roll (not in a package with others) of Jelly Roll Morton's "The Pearls,"
you got yourself one heck of a bargain. Collectors have been looking for
it for years. One just showed up a few months ago, gratefully for we
historians. There is also a missing hand-played roll of Scott Joplin
playing his "Pleasant Moments," which is a syncopated waltz. If that one
turns up, I can't say how high the price would go, but it would bar most
collectors from purchase.
The bottom line is, if YOU like the roll, you paid the right price for
it. But the way this package was offered, generically with no titles,
catalog numbers, performers, nothing... the price should be 50-75 cents
each. Maybe a dollar each on a good day, and assuming they were dance
tunes.
Hope this helps, and that you are enjoying your rolls!
BTW... you can listen to some nice piano roll music (free!) on our
mp3.com website:

Look for the "Ragtime Repast" titles - they're in the tune descriptions.
Those are real piano roll performances. I hope you enjoy them. E-mail me
if you have trouble with the format.
RAGards,
