My husband has just bought me a large washbowl, the tag on it said
'Brownhill Pottery Co.' 1872-96.

On the bottom was written 6747x with a small 'p' underneath it, and Honiton
B.P.Co. was printed also on the bottom. Can anyone tell me anything about
either of these Companies?

Thanks in advance

Julie

Brownhills Pottery Co. (note the "s" on Brownhills) produced earthenware
in Tunstall, Staffordshire, England, from 1872-1896. If the mark has
the word "England," it's 1891 or later. The pottery became Salt Bros.
in 1896. "B.P.Co." is an abbreviation for Brownhills Pottery Co.,
and I'd guess that "Honiton" is a pattern name.

I had a look in the standard book on UK pottery marks, Geoffrey Godden's
"Encyclopeadia of British Pottery and Porcelain Marks. As I thought, the
Homiton and Brownhills factories were completely unconnected :-

early wares often unmarked

printed/impressed circular mark "Honiton Lace Art POttery" registered 1915

printed/impressed mark "Collard Honiton" England used 1918 - 1947

"NTS Hull" mark used 1945 - 1955

circular printed/impressed mark used 1956 onwards

"Honiton Pottery Devon" or "Honiton England" printed/impressed/moulded mark
used 1947 onwards

BROWNHILL

Brownhills Pottery
Tunstall
Stoke-on-Trent
Staffordshire
1872 - 1896, subsequently Salt Brothers

initial e.g. B. P. Co. used 1872 - 1896

printed shield-form+crown mark used 1872 - 1896

Brownhills Pottery above shield

Hoping this is useful,

I just ordered this book. If anyone is interested, do a search on Bibliofind.
There were several listed for sale.
