IME drip-trays for these were usually made from galvanised
pressed-steel. In the main, the rims were turned into a round lip.

On the cheaper ones, yes, the more ornate examples tended to be cast
iron, some were even copper.
I recall somewhere on the web someone offering cast iron reproductions.
They do come up for auction
online.

Mike,
I think we are talking cast iron for this hall tree based on some
pictures I've seen of similar ones. Do you know where on the web you
saw someone offering the reproductions? I'd rather have them than
nothing. I've already tried a few searches and had no luck. Also,
where do you recall that they come up on line at auctions? Do you mean
ebay or are there other places I can check in with.
Thanks,
Jack

You haven't (AFAICS) said which part of the world you live in...

He did say "where on the web". You know, the Internet even goes to some
a'them furrin countries now ...

However, it's not much use telling him that something is coming up in
Gaze's auction, Key's or others if he doesn't live this side of the
pond.
While you can contact them by e-mail and even put in a commission bid,
the auctions are generally weekly, and items (except the larger and more
expensive ones, such as vintage motorcycles, cars, etc.) only feature in
printed catalogues, with few if any illustrations.

Oh, you mean like "center"?
I live in the Phoenix, Arizona suburbs.

Did he? I wouldn't notice 'center' because I use that all the time in HTML...

Ah, well not much point in telling you if one turns up in a local
auction because I'd only see anything on the day, and the chances that
there'd be a match is pretty minimal.
I have a 19th-century walnut umbrella stand and the bottom drip pan is
copper.
It would be easy for a machine shop/fabricator to make one for your
piece - and probably not very expensive.
N.
I'm with Nancy on this - a sheet metal shop can whip up custom pans
for you in a flash. Sold quite a few hall trees in my day & don't
recall seeing any that came with CI inserts. Painted tin was typical,
which makes more sense since CI would be prone to rust.
Nancy T
Thank you for the advice. Want to try and find an existing one first.

Why not post some images of the hall tree on your webspace,
and give us the URL?
Kris
Good luck to you then...not something you're likely to just run across
loose and in the right size...they wore out, they got bent, they got
lost...in other words, there are lots more hall trees out there than
drip pans.
Nancy T
I wonder why/how he thinks the original drip pan was cast iron?

I wonder why he's so sure his umbrella stand is truly antique ;)
Kris
The Newsgroup Skeptic
Probably because a great many of the mid Victorian hall trees had cast
iron drip pans ;~)

I don't have my own webspace. I can send anyone interested a picture
of the hall tree if they provide me with an email address.
I was able to tell by looking at a bunch of similar looking antique
hall trees on the web ust like Mike says.
upload an image to a free online photo album and we can all have a look ;~)
Mike Wilcox
Good to know, I guess - see, I have an antique (for sure - was part of
original furniture when our campus Old Capitol building was actually
the original State of Iowa Capitol -1847) umbrella stand, walnut, and
with a copper drip pan. But it was never a hall tree, or part of one.

If you're truly posting through cox.net, you are paying
for "personal webspace" that you can upload images
to. There's many other free sites such as photobucket,
Google-whatever, etc.
Kris
Mike, I don't feel like setting up something I probably won't use
again. I'd be happy to send a photo to anyone interested in providing
their email address as I mentioned before. The bigger issue is getting
some help finding the pans I have originally described.
Look, newsgroups are a way of sharing information and most of us here
are happy to help those
that make is fairly easy for us to do so. If you can't be bothered to
spend five minutes to share an
image about an item we have all asked about, why should we bother to try
an help you any further?
Mike Wilcox

Uh, Jack. It takes less time to learn to use what you're paying
for, than to email photos to several people (IF anyone wanted
to help you privately).
I'm going to give you a 3.2 score for reeling us all in.
Kris
I am not very familiar with usenets. This is the second usenet group I
have ever been on. I don't know what a 3.2 score is nor do I need to.
If no one wants to help, then so be it.
