Just bought an antique victorian walnut hall tree. It is missing the
above referenced items. They sit on top of the bottom shelf of the
hall tree. They fit into 2 one-half inch diameter holes (4 1/2 inches
center to center). Please let me know if you have them and I'll send
pictures so that we can see if they will match up. Any leads for these
items would also be appreciated. Thank you.

On the cheaper ones, yes, the more ornate examples tended to be cast
iron, some were even copper.
I recall somewhere on the web someone offering cast iron reproductions.
They do come up for auction
online.

Mike,

I think we are talking cast iron for this hall tree based on some
pictures I've seen of similar ones. Do you know where on the web you
saw someone offering the reproductions? I'd rather have them than
nothing. I've already tried a few searches and had no luck. Also,
where do you recall that they come up on line at auctions? Do you mean
ebay or are there other places I can check in with.

Thanks,

Jack

He did say "where on the web". You know, the Internet even goes to some
a'them furrin countries now ...

However, it's not much use telling him that something is coming up in
Gaze's auction, Key's or others if he doesn't live this side of the
pond.

While you can contact them by e-mail and even put in a commission bid,
the auctions are generally weekly, and items (except the larger and more
expensive ones, such as vintage motorcycles, cars, etc.) only feature in
printed catalogues, with few if any illustrations.

I haven't noticed any US-isms in his spellings, so...

Ah, well not much point in telling you if one turns up in a local
auction because I'd only see anything on the day, and the chances that
there'd be a match is pretty minimal.

I have a 19th-century walnut umbrella stand and the bottom drip pan is
copper.

It would be easy for a machine shop/fabricator to make one for your
piece - and probably not very expensive.

I'm with Nancy on this - a sheet metal shop can whip up custom pans
for you in a flash. Sold quite a few hall trees in my day & don't
recall seeing any that came with CI inserts. Painted tin was typical,
which makes more sense since CI would be prone to rust.

Good luck to you then...not something you're likely to just run across
loose and in the right size...they wore out, they got bent, they got
lost...in other words, there are lots more hall trees out there than
drip pans.

Probably because a great many of the mid Victorian hall trees had cast
iron drip pans ;~)

hall trees on the web ust like Mike says.

Good to know, I guess - see, I have an antique (for sure - was part of
original furniture when our campus Old Capitol building was actually
the original State of Iowa Capitol -1847) umbrella stand, walnut, and
with a copper drip pan. But it was never a hall tree, or part of one.

If you're truly posting through cox.net, you are paying
for "personal webspace" that you can upload images
to. There's many other free sites such as photobucket,
Google-whatever, etc.

Mike, I don't feel like setting up something I probably won't use
again. I'd be happy to send a photo to anyone interested in providing
their email address as I mentioned before. The bigger issue is getting
some help finding the pans I have originally described.

Look, newsgroups are a way of sharing information and most of us here
are happy to help those
that make is fairly easy for us to do so. If you can't be bothered to
spend five minutes to share an
image about an item we have all asked about, why should we bother to try
an help you any further?

It would take me a whole lot longer than 5 minutes to do what you ask
because I have no such prior experience. With all due respect Mike, I
don't see what uploading an image has to do with helping me. I know
what I need and no one has suggested anywhere specific I can find
it.

Etsy.com has the reproduction drip pans for hall trees in certain sizes.
