Is there any safe, do-it-yourself way to clean antique oil paintings or should
this always be left to professionals? Looking for advice.

It should be left to the professionals. That is my humble opinion. :-)

Have the painting appraised first. Professional cleaning can be very
costly. I usually buy and keep damaged oil paintings to practice on. You
wouldn't want to to spend big bucks on a painting of little value. Would
you? -Dave-

Perhaps there are art groups who might be better able to answer your
question, however, I have been told by friends who deal in oils that the
only cleaning a non-professional should do is gentle dusting with a clean,
soft brush.

the best thing I have found to clean them is a little bit of strong oil
based solvent. Hell, on
my oil paintings, it gets them almost back to BEFORE the artist started
painting.
